Today, Nintendo has announced the cast for the upcoming live action Legend of Zelda movie. According to a social media post from legendary video game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, the role of Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason and the role of Link will be played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth. The social media post shared a photo of both actors in vaguely Zelda-adjacent set and costume, though the movie has not started filming yet. Miyamoto also confirmed in his message that the movie is still planned for May 7th, 2027, which is a slight delay from its originally announced release date of March 26th, but still a long way away.

Miyamoto reveals The Legend of Zelda live action film stars, we now know who will play Link and Zelda

The two stars of this upcoming movie may or may not look familiar to you. Bo Bragason, who is playing Zelda, is an English actress known for her roles in the drama series Renegade Nell and thriller series The Jetty. You may recognize Benjamin Evan Ainsworth from the Netflix series The Haunting of Bly Manor or as the voice of Disney’s live action Pinocchio movie from 2022.

There is still so much we don’t know about this Legend of Zelda adaptation planned to be released nearly two years from now. Will it directly adapt a game such as Ocarina of Time or Breath of the Wild? Or something completely original? What we do know is who is involved in the production behind the scenes. Wes Ball is planned to direct the project, and has told Entertainment Weekly that he is aiming for something more like a live action Hayao Miyazaki movie than something like Lord of the Rings, despite the filming set to take place in New Zealand. Ball is known for previously directing movies such as Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Maze Runner.

Alongside Miyamoto, this Legend of Zelda movie will be produced by former chief creative officer of Marvel Entertainment, Avi Arad. According to a movie industry insider, Nintendo is planning to make this Legend of Zelda adaptation into a trilogy, with actors signed on for three movies over six years. Following the success of the Super Mario Bros. Movie, and the announced sequel, Nintendo could be setting itself up for the establishment of a film empire.

In response to Miyamoto sharing the news on social media, fans couldn’t help themselves. One user shared an image of Jack Black as Link, pointing out how the famous actor has appeared in so many unexpected video game roles in recent years, such as Bowser and Minecraft Steve. Another image put Owen Wilson in the role of Link, which feels more unexpected, but at least he is blonde.
