We have new leaks about the PlayStation 6. Published data reveals that the console will be several times more powerful than the PS5, but cheaper than the PlayStation 5 Pro.
Sony’s working on ways to attract players who haven’t upgraded from the PS4 yet. PlayStation 6 is part of the plan, and the company’s approach is meant to go against what some players were expecting. On top of that, Tom, a leaker from the channel Moore’s Law is Dead, revealed the expected specs for the new console, with the info reportedly coming from AMD docs.
We’re gradually getting more details about the PS5. In the latest video on the Moore’s Law is Dead channel, we get a look at the specs AMD suggested for the PlayStation 6. These apply to both the stationary console codenamed Orion and the handheld codenamed Canis. In both cases, the consoles’ performance was compared to the standard PlayStation 5.
The Orion version is expected to have three times the rasterisation performance and up to ten times better ray tracing. The processor would have eight cores using the Zen 6 architecture (or better), and the graphics would be built on the Navi 5 architecture.
The console would also come with the latest GDDR7 memory, featuring a 160-bit or 192-bit bandwidth. A key feature is backward compatibility, which would cover games from both the PS5 and PS4. Sadly, we have no information about the PS3. What's interesting, the new console is expected to be more energy-efficient, with a TBP around 160 W, compared to the PS5’s over 200 W.
The Canis handheld is said to have half the power of the PS5, according to the documents, supporting the plan to include a power-saving mode. The info from a few months back about the portable console using 15 W of power was also mentioned again. On top of that, Canis should have the same backward compatibility features.
In the end, the handheld will be more efficient than the ROG Ally X, but it still won’t be as powerful as desktop devices. The console will also have a USB-C to HDMI port, so you can connect it to a TV or monitor.
After looking at all this, one important thing stands out. According to the leaker, the technical data comes from a 2023 AMD presentation made for Sony. Keep in mind, these are only proposed specs for the PlayStation 6 - not confirmed details. Tom also believes that while some parts might have changed, Sony’s overall approach hasn’t - so the leak still gives us a good idea of what to expect from the PS6.
Sony’s approach to pricing is pretty interesting. After the PlayStation 5 Pro launched, some people thought the PlayStation 6 would have to be pretty expensive. However, the leaker believes Sony has a different take on things. According to him, the PS6 is expected to cost no more than $500, since the company wants to keep it affordable.
The Orion and Canis versions should be affordable enough to draw in players who are still using the PlayStation 4. The PS6 could finally get them to leave their old console behind after all these years. We’ll have to wait a bit longer for that to happen though. Both consoles are set to go into production around mid-2027, which means the earliest release would be in late 2027 or early 2028.
