Earlier this summer, during the Xbox Summer Showcase, the gaming giant revealed a collaboration with Asus to produce the publisher’s first handheld device, the Asus ROG Xbox Ally. You may remember it as the device that was shown alongside one of the most significant updates to Hollow Knight: Silksong in years. Since that reveal, we have not learned anything else about the new device, but a potential leak seems to suggest that the price will be high.

Prices for the Asus ROG Xbox Ally may have been leaked, and it is looking expensive

Initially spotted by the Spanish gaming website 3DJuegos, a Google preview for the two versions of the new handheld on the Asus store might have given us a hint at how much these devices will cost. Given that this is coming from a Spanish website, the potentially leaked price is in Euros, but the image shared puts the Asus ROG Xbox Ally at 599 euros (or roughly $700 USD), and the higher tier ROG Xbox Ally X at 899 euros (or roughly 1,050 USD). If these prices are correct, it makes these two devices among the most expensive consoles on the market. For context, a PS5 Pro retails for $700.

Of course, this is far from confirmed. The information was quickly taken down, and there has been no information shared from Xbox or Asus. We don’t even know the exact release date for the device, just that we’ll be playing Hollow Knight: Silksong on it later this year. As for how believable these prices are, the 2023 ROG Ally on the Asus store retails for $500, while the Extreme edition retails for $650. Since this new device is an officially licensed Xbox handheld, and it is a few years newer, it makes sense for the prices to increase, but maybe not quite by this much.

Xbox is late to the handheld market. The Switch 2 is in full swing, already becoming the fastest selling console of all time. The Steam Deck continues to be a huge success for Valve, not to mention other companies like Asus who have handheld devices on the market as well. Even the basic ROG Ally advertises Game Pass on its page, offering three months free of Game Pass Ultimate with purchase. Why would anyone spend $200 more for a handheld just because it has the Xbox logo on it?

One argument could be the first-party Xbox games that have been promised to be playable on the handheld from day one. But many (if not all) of these games would also be available on PC, and therefore available on the ROG Ally. Only leaving out the few games that are too much for a PC handheld to run smoothly. The amount of games missed feels like it would be minimal.

Reddit caught wind of this potential leak, and the comments were pretty fantastic. The top comment with nearly three thousand upvotes simply reads “X pensive.” While other comments point out the ridiculousness of the price, some users were quick to point out how uncompetitive this makes Xbox’s new device, saying things like “Nintendo Switch 2 looking really cheap…” and “Another win for the Steam Deck without doing anything.”

Again, this is only a potential leak. This is not the confirmed prices for these devices. It could be a placeholder number as they put the website together, and it just happened to accidentally go public for a moment. This could also be accurate for the European market but change drastically in other regions. For now, we’ll have to wait to see what Asus and Xbox decide to reveal in the coming weeks and months.
