Dementia-friendly games? Once again, Reddit did what it does best when it matters.

Reddit is one of those places where your opinion only really counts if others agree with you. It’s a strange space where you can get instant help on nearly any topic, not just gaming (like that one time someone with two thumbs on one hand had an problem with their Steam Deck), or end up completely insulted. You never quite know what you'll get – sometimes even bug bounties from Valve get discovered there. But this time, Reddit proved to be the perfect community to find the ideal games for someone dealing with dementia.
Spooof made a post on Reddit asking for game recommendations, but it wasn’t your typical request. They were looking for titles suited for a 40-year-old living with dementia.
His favorite game for years has been Destiny, but his mental abilities have been continuously slipping and now it’s just too complicated. He still has reflexes and coordination to play an FPS, but he just can’t remember anything and PvP is too overwhelming.
It didn’t take long before the suggestions came pouring in, with hundreds of helpful responses from the community. People recommended titles like Serious Sam, Timesplitters, Left 4 Dead, and even pointed to the old South Park on the Nintendo 64. They all lean into fast-paced fun without complex mechanics.
A few users suggested that retro games might be a good fit too, given their simplicity and nostalgic appeal. But the real breakthrough came when someone simply mentioned the boomer shooter genre.
Essentially a revival of 90s era FPS that go straight to the point. Shoot, violence, gore and not a lot of fluff.
And that seemed like the perfect fit for this situation. As long as the objectives are clear and the arrows point you in the right direction, it just might work. Doom, Warhammer 40K: Boltgun, or Ultrakill should be the best options. An update was promised by spooof once the games are tested out.

Been with gamepressure.com since 2019, mostly writing game guides but you can also find me geeking out about LEGO (huge collection, btw). Love RPGs and classic RTSs, also adore quirky indie games. Even with a ton of games, sometimes I just gotta fire up Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, KOTOR, or Baldur's Gate 2 (Shadows of Amn, the OG, not that Throne of Bhaal stuff). When I'm not gaming, I'm probably painting miniatures or admiring my collection of retro consoles.
