A new RwimWorld DLC, Odyssey, is something fresh in this universe. It allows us to create a mobile base and visit the furthest places on the planet… and even space. However, there is one tech, which can completely change the game.
RimWorld has never been more popular. After the release of Odyssey, the game reached its peak of concurrent players (via SteamDB). A marvelous feat almost 7 years from its premiere. No wonder, the latest DLC introduced a fresh mechanic, which was anticipated by many players – gravships. Now, we can go into space or to far away places on the planet. We can become space nomads… However, before you start, you should be aware of one technology that can influence gameplay tremendously.
Of course, the first thing we want to do in RimWorld right now (if you have Odyssey DLC) is to build our own gravships. We have covered how to do that and gather some crucial resources in other guides, so I will not focus on that here. Nevertheless, once we have the vessel, we can be finally free. Those who want just traverse space don’t have to worry about anything else. However, people who wish to have a permanent base on the planet can be a little bit disappointed. Launching a gravship causes the destruction of your current local map. You can’t return to it. Theoretically, you can try building the ship somewhere else, not on your main map, but there is an easier and safer, though not cheap, way to fix this issue.
There is technology which will allow you to maintain a stable colony on the surface of the planet. It is called the Grav anchor. Building it costs 300x plasteel, 80x gravlite panel and 5x advanced component. It is a steep price, I will not deny that. However, it allows you to save the map you are starting from. It means that you will be able to keep your own base and launch comfortably from your own yard. It can help tremendously those people who wish to build spacefaring colonies.
You can imagine that having a permanent base and the ability to fly into space, at the same time, can change the gameplay quite drastically. Give it a try when you have a chance! Good luck out there.
