The Last of Us 2 Secures Most GotY Awards in History

The Last of Us 2 has collected the most „Game of the Year” awards in history. Naughty Dog's work beat the record held by The Witcher 3.

The Last of Us: Part II launched in the middle of last year and stirred considerable controversy. The game was received extremely warmly by reviewers, which translated into a very high average score on Metacritic. On the other hand, some players did not share the enthusiasm of the media and immediately flooded the Internet with negative reviews after the release. As it turns out, the title ultimately achieved considerable success and became the work with the largest number of "Game of the Year" awards in history.

According to data published by gameawards.net, a total of 576 such titles were awarded in 2020. Of this total, as many as 300 awards (192 from journalists and 108 from the players) went to The Last of Us: Part 2. For the sake of comparison, the runner-up, Hades, received 64 awards, and the third place, Ghost of Tsushima, received 63.

In the classification for the 2003-2020 period, the competition was more evenly matched. The Last of Us: Part II was followed by The Witcher 3, which received a total of 280 awards. The podium is closed by God of War with 260 awards.

It should be borne in mind here that the number of "Game of the Year" awards is not fixed and changes every year. This also, to some extent, affects the overall results. For example, 2011's The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which sits at number 6 on the list, could receive a maximum of 410 awards, which is over 160 less than The Last of Us: Part 2.
