At a recent Ubisoft shareholders' meeting hosted by CEO Yves Guillemot, an unexpected game announcement was made. Initially reported by Stephen Totilo of Game File, Guillemot reportedly confirmed that Ubisoft is planning for a future Ghost Recon game during a strategy presentation. The long-running stealth action game series has been in a lull since 2019’s Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, which was a commercial and critical flop. Following a tumultuous few years at Ubisoft, the publisher established a new subsidiary in March, backed by a significant investment from Chinese gaming giant Tencent. This “announcement” comes alongside a warning from Ubisoft to shareholders about the danger of leaks and announcing games too early.

The strange irony of Ubisoft’s unexpected Ghost Recon announcement

According to Game File, the Ghost Recon announcement almost feels offhanded, mentioned casually despite the lack of any official news on the subject. In a presentation on Ubisoft’s strategy, Guillemot said: “…our objective is to also make strong progress in the growing market, generally speaking, by continuing to enhance our current experiences that we offer—and capitalizing on upcoming launches, such as The Division and Ghost Recon.” Any fans of the series, or those familiar with Ubisoft’s properties and upcoming games, might have zoned out during the corporate speak, and then suddenly perked up at the end of that sentence. Aside from rumors provided by an insider earlier this month, there has been no official word on a new Ghost Recon game.

The rumors claim that the working title for this upcoming Ghost Recon game is “Ovr,” and that it could launch in the second half of 2026. Initially, the official announcement was expected to arrive in next year’s annual summer showcase, Ubisoft Forward, which was canceled for the first time this year. But it seems like maybe the announcement has happened, regardless of how intentional it was.

The irony here is that at another point in the presentation, Ubisoft’s CEO also addressed potential dangers to Ubisoft, which included things like game delays, server failures, and other issues that might be expected. But one new addition practically flies in the face of this odd Ghost Recon news. According to Game File, Guillemot warned investors about “the ‘high’ risk around ‘information disclosure’ which includes leaks of player data as well as ‘[a] premature or poorly orchestrated announcement of a new game…’” Which sounds a lot like what Guillemot just did.

Perhaps, since the information was rumored already a few weeks ago, Ubisoft felt that the cat was already out of the bag. Or maybe the shareholder meeting felt like the kind of event that would go unnoticed. It certainly did for a few days. As Totilo wrote for Game File, “While the meeting occurred a week ago and has been archived on Ubisoft’s website since then, there’s been little to no reporting about the event.” With so much other news, even around Ubisoft itself, it’s not that surprising that this was missed. Even in the same shareholder meeting, Ubisoft’s CEO was asked about the Stop Killing Games initiative and the impact of Ubisoft’s 2014 racing game, The Crew, which may have sparked the entire movement.

Ultimately, we will have to wait to hear more from Ubisoft about the future of Ghost Recon. If the Ubisoft Forward presentation returns next summer, that could be the moment that we learn more. But now that the information appears to be officially confirmed, there might not be much hype for a surprise announcement next year.
