True Crime: New York City, released 21 years ago, was an ambitious but deeply flawe production. Especially on PC, the game left much to be desired, and many of its issues were never fixed by the developers. As a result, the task fell to the players themselves. One of them, known as ThirteenAG, has been developing a project called Widescreen Fix for a decade now. Just as the name suggests, it originally started as a simple mod that added support for high widescreen resolutions. However, it has now received a major update that introduces a large number of changes, significantly improving the whole game.

There are many fixes, and when combined they finally allow the game to fully spread its wings on PC.

  1. Full support for 60 FPS gameplay has been introduced. Other fans had previously figured out how to enable this, but until now it often broke the game’s logic and made it run too fast. The solution implemented in the latest version of Widescreen Fix does not have this issue.
  2. The mod also introduces so-called “raw” mouse input, without any acceleration. This is extremely important, as it fixes the terrible aiming that has long plagued the PC version of True Crime: New York City.
  3. An option to increase shadow resolution has also been added.
  4. The author has also improved the graphics by implementing a number of effects that were available in the PlayStation 2 version but were missing on PC for some reason, such as depth of field, motion blur, and SMAA.
  5. Support for widescreen resolutions has also been improved, so interface elements are no longer awkwardly stretched and are now correctly positioned on the screen.
