Ultrakill, the second best-rated single-player FPS on Steam, is experiencing a renaissance of popularity with a major update featuring new missions.
Ultrakill is a first-person shooter that combines retro setting with an acrobatic combat system. This combination appealed so much to Steam users that the game became the second best-rated single-player FPS game on the service (only Half-Life: Alyx has better reviews). That's why it's worth writing about the renaissance of popularity that Ultrakill is currently experiencing.
Ultrakill debuted in early access in September 2020. The game is available only on PC. Work on the project is slowly coming to an end. In fact, the plans are for version 1.0 to have nine "layers" of campaign, so there are only two more to left add.
Ultrakill is one of the first great successes in the category of boomer shooters, which was due to the fact that the developers did not limit themselves to recreating old gameplay solutions and offered a combat system that was very extensive for an FPS. Sometimes it even gives the impression of a shooter variation on the theme of Devil May Cry, offering, among others, point reward system based on the style in which we kill enemies. This was actually joked about by the game's publisher, New Blood Interactive, when it registered the web address www.devilmayquake.com, which leads to Ultrakill's card on Steam.
Players liked this approach to the FPS genre very much, and even the emergence of other acrobatic boomer shooters did not diminish the admiration of Ultrakill. It is enough to mention that on Steam the game has 98% positive reviews, which is categorized as "overwhelmingly positive" reception.
