Version Mismatch in NMS; How to Deal with It

In this guide we talk about version mismatch in NMS. If you can’t play with friends, we will help you.

Exploring space is a dream of many people. Hello Games production, No Man’s Sky, allows you to do just that without even leaving your own home. Is there anything better than losing yourself in almost infinite universe with myriads of planets to find and examine? Of course! It is to lose yourself in space… with friends. It can be challenging at times due to numerous connectivity problems. One of most common is version mismatch. Let’s find out what it means and how to deal with it!

NMS version mismatch explained

With constant updates being issued to the game, it can be a great opportunity to revisit No Man’s Sky vast world again and again, yet it comes with some problems. Frequent updates can enrich the game with new features, fix bugs and optimise experience, but it can also lead to some issues with game compatibility. Let’s not forget that NMS features crossplay, allowing players from different platforms to connect and play together. This leaves even more space for inconsistencies to happen.

Version mismatch is an information that can appear while trying to join a game session. It indicates that the host’s and client’s game versions are different. Due to that, it is impossible to connect. A big update is not necessary for such message to appear. Sometimes, there can be a small hotfix that will make it unable for players to connect.

How to fix version mismatch

This error message can be especially common around the time of bigger patches release. Make sure to follow the steps below to troubleshoot this problem:

  1. First thing to check is if there are no new updates pending. Make sure that the game version of the host and client is the most recent one.
  2. If the game has all the latest updates installed but the players are using different platforms (for example PC and Playstation), keep in mind that an update can hit those with several hours difference. In this case, there is no other option than to wait for both devices to receive the same update.
  3. Another option is to verify game’s integrity. Doing that checks for any corrupted game files online and fixes them if necessary.
  4. The last thing that may be blocking you from connecting to other people’s sessions is using experimental branch of the game. It is recommended for most players to play on standard release branch for the most optimised experience.
