10 Weird & Obscure Games You Might Not Know

In the following list we present ten bizarre games that stand out in a sea of lukewarm productions. Do not expect AAA titles here!

Table of Contents

Genesis Noir

  1. Genre: point-and-click adventure
  2. Platforms: PC, XOne, Switch
  3. Number of Steam reviews: 408
  4. How it's odd: We visit space, Earth from thousands of years ago, and jazz cafes in order to save our fiancée from the Big Bang

Was the world created in a lovers' dispute? Did the love triangle contribute to the Big Bang? What does planet Earth have to do with all this? These questions are answered by the game Genesis Noir, in which we set off on an unusual journey through time and space.

The eponymous big bang means not only the proposed moment of the birth of our universe. This production takes the beginning of the cosmos quite literally – presented as a gunshot. Unfortunately, the bullet flies towards the protagonist's loved one, and he decides to save her. So begins a strange adventure, during which you can learn a little about the world around you.

The game has an unusual gameplay. Sometimes, we have to combine elements to get little creatures, other times we solve simple logic puzzles, and other times still we open drawers and see what falls out of them. Music plays an important role here, making the game more enjoyable and really gets going at the most crucial moments.

The title is linear and fairly short, mind you. Nevertheless, I think it's worth checking out – especially if you like jazz.

Currently, Genesis Noir is available with an Xbox Game Pass subscription, so owners of that service can try the game out at no extra charge.

A Fold Apart

  1. Genre: puzzle game
  2. Platforms: PC, Switch, iOS, XOne, PS4
  3. Number of Steam reviews: 43
  4. Why it's odd: a game about moving, in which it's not the character's movements that are most important – it's the proper folding of paths around it.

Have you ever gone for a walk with the road ahead of folding around and connecting to a completely different route? Or have you ever experienced a situation where everything around you suddenly stood upside down and you fell, only to find that you were no longer on the same path? No? Well, it happens to the characters in A Fold Apart quite often!

The production is a charming game showing the difficulties of a loving couple who are forced to live far away from each other because of work. A Fold Apart tackles the fears and concerns that long-distance relationships can cause. The story is presented in the form of messages written by the protagonists to each other, while the gameplay begins when the protagonists begin to consider the meaning of one another's words, and analyze their own feelings.

This title is likely to catch the attention of origami enjoyers and people who like playing with the perspective. The player's job is to get the characters from one place to another, and we do this by folding the environment like a piece of paper. This production offers a series of logic challenges of varying levels of complexity, but don't expect very difficult puzzles. A Fold Apart can be completed in as little as two hours or so.

I'm not sure the gameplay makes up for the full price. It seems to me that this is one of those titles that's worth adding to your wish list and buying on promotion.

Kind Words

  1. Genre: simulator of being nice!
  2. Platform: PC
  3. Number of Steam reviews: 5121
  4. How it's odd: a very unusual initiative in the gaming world

I'm going to cheat a bit on today's list, as it seems to me that Kind Words can't quite be considered a game. However, I have no doubt that this is an unusual title.

Everyone has worse days sometimes and life can seem overwhelming. Kind Words is the answer to that. It's a production in which we can anonymously write to other people, confiding in them about our problems, and they respond with a kind word or advice. This title is for mutual support, so not all expressions are allowed – some must pass developer approval. The game comes with a very pleasant soundtrack.

It's worth noting that this game did not die a natural death, as is the custom of many odd games. Data from SteamDB shows that this title maintains a steady number of players – around 20-30 at any one time. It may not be a staggering number, but it means that there is always someone willing to write back.

This truly fascinating initiative is apparently in demand. If you're looking for support, and you want to do it anonymously, maybe it's worth considering?

Sunless Skies

  1. Genre: RPG
  2. Platforms: PC, PS4, XOne, Switch
  3. Number of Steam reviews: 1859
  4. How it's odd: Sky travel has never been so easy – all it takes is a steam locomotive

Sunless Skies is similar to the previous work of its creators, Sunless Sea, but this isn't a sequel. The developers have also implemented a number of fixes that make the production much more accessible to newcomers. The creators have given fans a combination of a paragraph game and an RPG, and take us to a fantastic lands, where steampunk mixes with fantasy and science fiction.

This title allows you to become the captain of a steam locomotive, but one that can go to the skies. During our sky-high adventures, we discover many interesting places – islands floating in the air, a monument to an unknown rat, the tomb of a silent saint, and even London.

We reach all these locations using our "airship," which can be upgraded and we can hire crew and officers for it. Traveling can be dangerous, of course, and we're often forced to use cannons to fend off attackers. Maintaining the ship also costs money, and in order to get it, you have to trade such unusual goods as souls and hours. However, the player must be prepared for the fact that the lion's share of gameplay is reading and selecting the appropriate dialogue options. This is a production for people who are not afraid of the written word.

You can devote many hours, even dozens, to Sunless Skies. .

Aviary Attorney

  1. Genre: adventure / visual novel
  2. Platforms: PC, Switch
  3. Number of Steam reviews: 861
  4. How it's odd: It's a game for art lovers, boasting unusual visuals and an atmospheric soundtrack; in addition, it contains many dry jokes about birds

Has anyone ever told you not to ruffle feathers? It's a daily occurrence for the protagonists of the last game in today's lineup. Mr. Sparrowson (Wroblowski) and Mr. Falcon (Falcon) are always ready to solve new crime mysteries. They certainly can't be accused of being birdbrained.

Aviary Attorney is a typical lawyer simulator – not a common game theme, but several similar titles have been made. In this production, we talk to witnesses and search crime scenes. The evidence gathered this way allows us to find gaps in the prosecution's argument. It's up to us to ensure that our clients are exonerated. But are you sure they should? This title has three endings that depend on the player's decisions.

The noteworthy element in Aviary Attorney is the visuals, as the game is a small work of art. This production takes us to 19th century Paris. There wouldn't be anything unusual about this if it weren't for the fact that the game's protagonists are humans with animal heads (or animals with human bodies – we can't really tell). For the rather unusual graphic style, the authors used the work of a 19th century caricaturist who published under the pseudonym Jean-Jacques or J.J. Grandville. To preserve the atmosphere, the game's soundtrack was also inspired by the era.

I personally adore the visuals of Aviary Attorney, and the game's definitely conquered my heart. If only for that reason, this production is worth a try. Then, it's also great if you like dry humor.
