12 Studios That Seem to Be Making the Same Games, But We Love Them Anyway

It takes skill to copy. Some game creators know this, regularly serving the fans similar titles. Their elements, however, are skillfully mixed and served in such a way that players – instead of complaining – are delighted and ask for more.

The adjective "outstanding" goes well with Hades, the newest roguelike from Supergiant Games. Americans have four games to their credit, three of which can be considered relatively similar. These are Bastion, Transistor and Hades. And yes – I realize that the first two are isometric action RPGs in a fantasy and science fiction setting, respectively, and that the third is more of a roguelike, but... I can't help but feel that Hades' success was determined by the fact that Supergiant Games has been polishing a specific formula for a decade – with a slight departure in case of Pyre.

Despite this, it's difficult to unequivocally consider Hades a clone of Bastion. It's more like an extension of the evolution of the older brother. The success of this newer game was not accidental – it resulted from the fact that the creators carefully followed the trends prevailing in the industry, as if just waiting for the perfect moment to release the demanding roguelike. And it arrived – Hades was released in Epic Games' Store Early Access in December 2018 and became a hit almost immediately.

Hades owes a lot to the previous games from the studio.

The game was distinguished by a refined, extremely pleasant gameplay, excellent audiovisual setting and the narration by Logan Cunningham. The most interesting thing about it is that the above sentence describes Hades just as well as Transistor and Bastion. The main attraction of these games, i.e. the super satisfying combat with hosts of enemies, is quite similar in each of them. The battles are spectacular, dynamic and demanding, and since the success depends mainly on the player's skills, they become extremely addictive. Describing the evolution of subsequent productions by Supergiant Games, one could only say "more spectacular, more dynamic, more addictive" and so on. Seriously, give Hades just one chance. You will just love it!

The inconspicuous similarity – at least in case of superficial knowledge of the individual titles – can be considered the perfekt kind. And although we don't know what the next game of the American studio will be, it seems more than certain that even if the creators try to experiment this time – as in the case of Pyre – they will sooner or later cook up another "clone" of Hades. The only question is whether, given the popularity of the latter, some similarities in gameplay will not become too obvious. Because Logan Cunningham will return as narrator, I don't doubt it for a second.
