Transport Tycoon

Business Model: premium

TRANSPORT TYCOON IN A NUTSHELL
  1. Developer: 31x Limited
  2. Publisher: 31x Limited
  3. Released in: 2013

We've become accustomed to the fact that when a series of PC economic strategies enters the mobile market, the result is usually a simplistic spin-off, whose main purpose is to extort money through aggressive micro-payment systems. Fortunately, there are exceptions to this rule, and one of the most prominent examples is Transport Tycoon.

The 1994 PC original remains one of the best games of its kind to this day, and its mobile incarnation does not disappoint at all. Much of this is due to the fact that the original creator, Chris Sawyer, was responsible for this project as well. The Transport Tycoon's new incarnation contains everything fans loved more than two decades ago. So we get a game about the development of a transport company with a complex economic model, which makes effectively running a transport company a real challenge, especially since we use trains, planes, boats and trucks. We have to make profit, and mistakes can be costly.

At the same time, the audio/visual layer has been revamped. Graphically, the game is brand new; the interface was also revamped to match the specificity of touch screens. The result is a real masterpiece and one of the absolutely best economic strategies available on the mobile market.

Clash Royale

Business Model: free-to-play

CLASH ROYALE IN A NUTSHELL
  1. Developer: Supercell
  2. Publisher: Supercell
  3. Released in: 2016

Clash Royale is one of the greatest mobile hits ever released. In the first three years after launch, the game brought in $2.5 billion in revenue, according to Sensor Tower. That's $2.3 million a day. Not a bad good score, is it?

The gameplay comes down to clashes between monarchs, each of whom is in their own castle. The castles are connected with a network of roads. The game is diversified by cards that trigger additional effects, such as activating spells, or summoning characters.

Clash Royale is easy to master, but it has a lot of depth, and the player has more influence on the gameplay than in many other mobile strategies and the game is less dependent on micropayments than, say, Clash of Clans. As a result, the game gained considerable e-sports popularity. The tournaments are watched by crowds of people, and there's never a shortage of people willing to test their skills online.
