When the gameplay of this title was first shown at The Game Awards last year, it was widely compared to a cinematic trailer. That's quite accurate – without knowing that the footage is in-game, many people might actually believe that they're watching a pre-rendered video. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, the prequel, was one of the few, yet precious double-A/triple-I titles – indie game's that don't actually differe from full-fledged AAAs, maybe except the quantity of content. Looking at it in retrospect, almost five years after the release of the first part, the sequel seems set to overshadow most of these fancy, big and expensive games.
At the moment, the details of Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2's plot are unknown; we can only guess to what extent the title will be related to the last entry and look for hints in the announcements. It's known, however, that the protagonist of the title will still be a Celtic warrior named Senua, known from the first installment. The world from Hellblade 2 looks familiar, but it doesn't lack unconventional solutions and numerous threats. The game should preserve the most creative ideas that the original brought us, which means that we'll travel a world where reality mixes with illusion and the heroine's visions.
The core mechanics will not change the assumptions of the well-received predecessor: the upcoming title remains a third-person action game in which the player's ultimate task is to defeat increasingly intimidating bosses and solve environmental puzzles. The biggest leap from the previous game from Ninja Theory, however, can be seen in the graphics. The studio regularly posts updates on the progress of work on the game on its social media and you can already notice how much attention is paid to graphics. Mo-cap sessions for character and facial animations are created by the studio using their own, cuting-edge tech. On many of the available materials, you can see the smallest details in the appearance of the heroine, such as the texture of her skin, individual eyelashes or broken blood vessels in her eyes.
The release date of Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 remains a great mystery for now, but late 2022 is often cited as probable time frame. Unlike the self-published prequel, Hellblade 2 will be released under Xbox Game Studios. This makes this game exclusive to PC and current-gen Xbox consoles.
