What is Baldur's Gate 3?

Honestly, who had expected a new Baldur's Gate was comming before the announcement? Larian Studios surprised almost everyone by announcing the sequel to the legendary series. However, we have to bear in mind that in terms of mechanics, we won't be getting the old thing – the developers are betting on a turn-based approach to the game, so Baldur's Gate III will be closer to Divinity: Original Sin series.

What's the story in Baldur's Gate 3?

The plot of Baldur's Gate III takes us one hundred years ahead of the events of Bhaal's Throne, i.e. an expansion to Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. Baldur's gate is attacked by a race of mind-flayers. Before they're be driven away, the invaders kidnap some of the inhabitants and perform ceramorphosis on them – the mind-flayer embryo is implanted into the victim's brain, gradually taking control of the host, changing not only the mind but also the physical characteristics, and even providing certain abilities. The protagonist will be the host of such a parasite. The initial race against time and the desire to heal will falter when we discover that thanks to the embryo, we're gaining access to unique abilities. But this is just the beginning of our adventure.

OUR EXPECTATIONS

I'm quite confident. I'm absolutely calm about the outcome. At the same time, the third "Baldur" is very likely to stir controversies. It's going to be compared to the highly idealized, classic game that arguably was never bettered. But this series has always worked that way. It was always one step ahead of everyone. I also believe that Larian will deliver. That it will deliver an epic tale of interesting heroes and villains that will haunt us even after the campaign is over. Besides, Larian is one of the few studios that can be trusted with Early Access. This form of release served Divinity: Original Sin II well, so I see no reason why it should be any different this time.

Minsc and Boo are ready. Swen Vincke, founder of Larian Studio, is too. This is a guy who has brought more freshness to old-school RPGs than peppermint does to Mr. Pearson's stew. I can't think of a better studio to resurrect this series. Mind Flayers will return, and I'm already thinking about how annoying they'll be as enemies. Lots of changes, lots of reinterpretations and radical decisions – and that's awesome. Sometimes it takes an earthquake to rekindle love. I can't count all the times I heard Irenicus's very first statement from Baldur's Gate II: "Ah, the child of Bhaal has awoken." I hope that this time, the game turns out to be good enough that I will be playing it in 2040 (provided there will still be electricity then).
