The main pros of the game

  • Challenging Gameplay: The game offers a significant challenge, especially for veteran players, providing a rewarding experience for those who enjoy difficult platformers.
  • Visual Appeal: The graphics are praised for being beautiful and vibrant, with dynamic and colorful levels that enhance the overall experience.
  • Innovative Mechanics: The introduction of Quantum Masks as context-sensitive power-ups adds depth to the platforming mechanics, making gameplay feel fresh. New crate types, such as timed flame crates, also contribute to the challenge.
  • Smooth Movement: Many players noted that the movement feels slick and smooth compared to previous titles, making for an enjoyable gameplay experience.
  • Content Abundance: The game is packed with content, including extra modes and collectibles, which some players appreciate as they extend playtime.

The main cons of the game

  • Difficulty Spike for Completionists: A common complaint is that the game is excessively difficult when aiming for 100% completion, with many players feeling that the requirements for collectibles are frustrating and sometimes unfair.
  • Level Length and Design Issues: Some levels are considered too long and tedious, leading to player fatigue. Additionally, issues with buggy commands and hitboxes can detract from the experience.
  • Character Redesigns: The redesigns of iconic characters received mixed reviews, with some players feeling that certain characters were downgraded visually.
  • Bugs and Technical Issues: Users reported various bugs, including problems with hitboxes and gameplay mechanics, which can hinder the experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Classic Mechanics: Some players expressed a desire for classic features from previous Crash games, such as the ability to spin away Wumpa fruits and extra lives.
  • Less Collectible Bloat: There is a sentiment that the game has too many collectibles and challenges, making completion feel overwhelming rather than rewarding. Players miss the simplicity of earlier titles where the collectible system was more straightforward.
  • Improved Level Design: Suggestions were made for better level design that would avoid frustrating mechanics like invisible crates or overly complex requirements for finding collectibles.

Summary

  • Overall, while Crash Bandicoot™ 4: It’s About Time is celebrated for its visuals, gameplay mechanics, and challenge, it faces criticism for its difficulty spikes, level design, and some technical issues.
