Things to Look Forward to at PAX East 2020

Despite the outbreak of the coronavirus hindering some studios' plans regarding their visit to Boston on Feb 27, PAX East 2020 still holds quite a few interesting attractions and events, including world premieres of some highly anticipated games.

PAX East 2020 – who's coming?

It's just a few days before PAX East 2020 begins – the event will launch on February 27 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center and last for four days (through March 1, since we have a leap year). The list of attractions prepared by the organizers is extensive, and there are several of them that we find particularly interesting. And that's even despite the absence of some big guests – Sony recently it will not attend the event due to the coronavirus outbreak, one of the game's that we won't see, despite the initial plans, will be The Last of Us 2. Coronavirus currently has a negative impact when it comes to attendance of big companies in mass events around the world, but if you wash your hands and don't kiss on the first date you should be fine. Fortunately, this year's PAX East still holds plenty of attractions. So here are some of the coolest things we're looking for on this year's PAX East.

Square Enix and Nintendo

We have quite a special year, as many companies are already preparing to enter the next generation of consoles with a bang, thus curbing their current release plans. There are, however, publishers who have ambitious plans for the next few months and are planning to exhibit them at PAX East 2020. In my opinion, the most interesting offer will come from Square Enix. The Japanese are preparing to release two big titles: Final Fantasy VII Remake and Outriders. Both productions can be an excellent reason to visit the publisher's booths.

But Square Enix are also taking precautions during PAX East in relation to the coronavirus. But don't worry – the linchpins of the show will take place, and there will be more to see beyond the anticipated remake of Final Fantasy 7. On the other hand, the panel dedicated to Final Fantasy 14 is one of the casualties.

FFVII needs no introduction – the game portraying the adventures of Cloud Strife is familiar even to those players who were born a bit too early to fully experience the original version. The remake should preserve the best elements of that production, but in a much more modern setting. Some aspects of the gameplay will undergo significant changes – including the combat system – but don't worry, the revealed gameplay fragments give many reasons to be optimistic.

Instead of Marvel's Avengers, we will see a new game from People Can Fly (the creators of Painkiller and Fortnite: Save the World) – Outriders – an interesting third-person, sci-fi shooter. We've recently visited the creators to watch and talk about their game. You can read our preview here.

Nintendo will also attend the event – the Japanese corporation announces that we will be able to play games like Yoshi' Crafted World, Dragon Quest Builders 2 or Mortal Kombat 11 at PAX East. We also suspect that Nintendo will bring the latest version of Animal Crossing: New Horizons along for the party.

Even more games, and a stage for indies

MisBits is about building, creativity, multi-player combat, and focusing on the community.

Among the various AAA and indie games, you will also find a new productions by Pow Wow Entertainment and Purple Lamp Studios (of Guild 3 fame). MisBits is an original multiplayer game, in which players build levels and then fight in them in various modes. Apart from the classic deathmatch, you can, for example, play football or solve simple puzzles. The core of MisBits, however, is dynamic combat – in the game we manage... heads that can take over the toys placed on the playing field. Each of the toys offers different skills and ultimate power, so reaching the best of them is a contest in and of itself. The game is very dynamic and shows a lot of potential, so do not forget to look at the zone with MisBits on PAX East (on the event map, you will find them at the number 18047 – 3Blackdot. If you can't show up at the event, then you can check the game on Steam (beta tests are currently underway you can also add it to the wishlist to keep track of developments). Closed beta testing continues until February 25, 2020. If you manage to get the code today or tomorrow, you will also get access to the full version of the game as soon as early acces launches (5 March 2020).

PAX East 2020 will also be a great opportunity to explore the latest ideas and projects of smaller developers – both well-known, and coming out from obscurity. The best opportunity for that are the two events, PAX East India Showcase and PAX Rising. Participants include The Behemoth (Castle Crashers), Devolver Digital (Weird West, Gorn and Dark), Finji (Overland and Night in the Woods), or tinyBuild (Hello Neighbor).

It is worth noting that many of the presented games will be available as playable demos within the Indie Megabooth.
