A continuation to Gratuitous Space Battles developed by Positech Games. Along with its twin project – Gratuitous Tank Battles – the game presents a slightly different approach to the popular tower defense strategy game genre. Like in the first installment in the series, the players cannot directly influence the outcome of particular battles, and the key to success lies in proper planning and preparation. One can do this by constructing from scratch various units and manually selecting parts and elements of munitions. Then, one has to prepare battle formations and give orders to their commanders, sit back and observe how his protégés handle the battle by themselves. In comparison to the first installment in the series, the developers introduced several new gameplay mechanics – the most prominent being 3 new spaceship classes (battleships, heavy fighters, and destroyers). The available set of weapons and components has been significantly expanded. The game also introduces carrier ships and the necessity to replenish fuel reserves.

An unusual logic game that combines a turn-based RPG with elements of the popular board game Scrabble, developed by Bacon Bandit Games. In Letter Quest: Grimm’s Journey, we assume the role of two grim reapers called Grimm and Rose who have to face hordes of ghosts, monsters, and other evil spawn using only the power of… words. While playing, we traverse five varied lands and fight turn-based battles with enemies, which allows us to enhance our character and weapons as we progress in the game. Combat itself is quite unusual, since subsequent clashes involve forming words from a grand dictionary that consists of roughly 190 thousand English words. Damage dealt to an enemy depends on the amount of points scored for a given word. The effect can be further modified with the use of magical potions and items that we can buy for jewels obtained in the course of the game.

The game was developed by an Italian studio The Fox Software, which specializes in this genre - it is popular mainly for such games as Ico Soccer for Nintendo DS or Throw In for PCs; the latter being a remake of the classic title Kick Off 2. The game focuses on delivering an arcade experience and is played from a classic aerial view. The player does not have to get accustomed to using many buttons. The game offers over 800 national and league teams from all over the world, giving an opportunity to play different kinds of matches. Unfortunately, Active Soccer 2 does not use official licenses, but the creators included a simple team editor, so the player does not have to use the default club and footballer names. One can play friendly matches, as well as both league and cup games, apart from taking part in the career mode, which is complemented by a simplistic management module, requiring the player to develop adequate tactics, supervise transfers and take care of funding-related issues. The Lost Pisces is a science fiction action-adventure game inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale Little Mermaid. The game tells the story of a synthetic being called Pisces who desires to acquire a soul in order to become human. We play as a human soldier who helps her make her dreams come true. Action is presented from the first-person perspective. Accompanied by Pisces, we travel through the game's futuristic world, exploring enormous steel structures, city ruins, and the depths of the sea. We will frequently face powerful mechanical bosses with whom we can fight with guns, or climb them in order to find their weaknesses. Pisces' evolution is an important part of the game. With time, her mechanical reactions become human instincts and emotions. Our behavior towards Pisces plays a crucial role in our synthetic friend's evolution. She can interpret our reactions and remember moments spent together. The Lost Pisces uses Unreal Engine 4.

During the gameplay, we traverse successive levels, in which we meet a whole bunch of different enemies and a large number of traps, which often require some cleverness. The hero can move left or right only, sometimes pushing static objects, but he has a spectacular way of dealing with opponents – his style of fighting is reminiscent of a ninja fighter. After finishing each stage, we receive a rating in form of stars, whose number depends on, among others, the time elapsed and the number of gathered gleaming balls. Shadow Bug has a characteristic graphic layer – only the backgrounds are colored, while the whole foreground, along with the hero and his enemies, is presented in black.

One of the most important uses of L.E.A.F. is control over life and death - the player can both deprive organisms of their lives or literally breathe life into them. An arcade racing game from Spanish studio EnjoyUp Games with classic top-down view. Though its focuses on Formula 1 racing car competition, its driving model is anything, but realistic, and fair play rules are rather lightly treated. We are given 10 different tracks from 10 countries, and the game is divided into racing seasons. Our vehicle’s parameters play major part in achieving victory, and they can be modified through tokens earned through racing. Due to that, we can forget about taking top positions during our first season, but as we upgrade our engine power, acceleration, brakes, tires and gearbox, we can progressively take higher places and finally compete for the top spots. Grand Prix Rock’N’Racing offers rather modest visuals and a rock’n’roll soundtrack.

An arcade game from the endless runner genre, with style inspired by the Dark Souls series. Slashy Souls has been developed by a in-house studio of Bandai Namco Games as a free-to-play title, without microtransactions. We play as a knight cutting his way through hordes of monsters on randomly generated maps. We must avoid traps and other dangers, collect items and fight enemies, including powerful bosses. All of this is done through simple gestures drawn on the screen that we perform in correct moments. Players are given a varied selection of weaponry and they can help themselves with magic. Like Dark Souls, Slashy Souls is characterized by its high difficulty level – each enemy is quite a challenging, and dying is extremely easy. On top of that, the game does not explain the basics, expecting a player to learn through a trial and error.

Another DLC for the crazy action game Goat Simulator released in 2014 by Coffee Stain. The Waste of Space expansion adds a completely new map to the game. The map is larger than anything that Goat Simulator and its expansions offered up until now. The new level consists of a large space area and of an alien planet with a colony on its surface. Typically for the Goat Simulator, there is no story per se. Instead, the game focuses on a typically sandbox gameplay model which is filled with absurd jokes and opportunities for having fun and engaging in combat. Chaos and destruction can be pursued not only on the surface of the planet and in space, but on space cruisers and space stations as well. The expansion also adds various futuristic technologies and a romance system which parodies the Mass Effect series.

Compared to the base games, Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation doesn’t stray out too far gameplay wise, with the most notable novelty being My Castle – a special location where we can interact with our allies. As we form bonds with our friends, they are willing to offer more effective cooperation during fights. Interestingly, we can also meet other players there and fight against their armies through the Street Pass function. A light-hearted adventure game, inspired by Monty Python’s surreal sense if humour, and the weirdest cases from the X-Files TV series. Maize was developed by Finish Line Games – an independent studio, which debuted in 2014 with Cel Damage HD. The action of the game takes place on an abandoned American farm, which is located above an underground research facility. The player assumes the role of a corncob that gained self-conciousness and human feelings as a result of a crazy experiment. This unusual “hero” has to get to the bottom of a conspiracy and discover the reasons for his existence. When it comes to mechanics, Maize is an adventure game seen from a first-person perspective. The gameplay focuses on exploration, conversations with NPCs, and solving intricate logical puzzles. As it discovers further secrets, our corncob encounters many original characters, such as a Russian version of Teddy Ruxpin – a mechanical teddy bear. Even if the game itself is rather light-hearted, Maize employs high-quality visuals, powered by Unreal Engine 4 technology.
