A mobile adventure game which adapts the popular television franchise Mr. Robot. The game was created by Night School (also responsible for Oxenfree) and published by Telltale Games by using premium distribution model (with no microtransactions). The main designer of Mr. Robot:1.51exfiltrati0n was Adam Hines, the screenwriter of Tales from the Borderlands. One day, as he walks next to Fun Society arcade games room, the protagonist finds someone’s phone. By checking its content he discovers the plans of the greatest cybercrime in the history that is going to be executed by the hacker group knows as fsociety. As it soon turns out, the owner of the phone, Darlene, is trying to get it back by any means possible. Mr. Robot:1.51exfiltrati0n is an unusual adventure game. After loading the game application the player’s phone starts imitating Darlene’s phone, with its own interface, database and services. By using it, the player gains information, communicates with virtual characters, making decisions that shape the story. The campaign is very non-linear and the decisions of the player can lead to various outcomes.

A turn-based jRPG with roguelike features developed by Spike Chunsoft. The title is a spin-off of the Mystery Dungeon series based on One Way Heroics, an independent game that is popular in Japan. 20 playable characters are available in the game and among them there are the characters from such series as Danganronpa and Shiren the Wanderer. Not all of them are playable from the start – the player must collect points which then can be spent on buying new perks and character classes. Mystery Chronicle: One Way Heroics contains many roguelike features like procedurally generated world with randomly placed traps, obstacles and treasures. However, the death of the protagonist isn’t permanent in the game. What distinguishes the game is the fact that with each turn the game world is consumed by a wall of light progressing from the left side of the screen. This forces the player to thoroughly plan his movements and strategy.

A third-person perspective survival horror inspired by console productions of this genre. The action of From Beneath takes place in a town called Cedar Heights, which mysteriously turns into a living hell. The campaign tells a story of seven independent characters who have to fight for their survival. Mechanically, From Beneath is an action-adventure game with the camera hanging behind the character’s back. Each hero is different, but none of them was born a warrior. Therefore, battles pose a significant challenge and each bullet is precious. Usually, it is best to simply sneak behind enemies’ backs, stay in the shadows, and distract opponents in numerous ways. Gameplay is complemented by logic puzzles. The narration depends on the hero you are in control of – the title does not allow switching between the characters. From Beneath offers large locations, decent 3D visuals, and a professional voiceover.

Puzzle, 3D Image, Singleplayer, Nintendo Exclusive.

Another installment in a series of logic games; it was created specifically for Nintendo 3DS. The player's goal here is to paint appropriate cubes in such a way so that models hidden inside of them can be revealed. The game was based on the rules of a puzzle created by Non Ishida - a Japanese graphics designer. Although the gameplay resembles Minesweeper for PC, the environments are three-dimensional. Blocks can be rotated freely and digits that are visible on particular cubes (the blocks are made of those) inform the player about the number of neighboring cubes they should paint with a given color. If cubes get painted in the correct color, they disappear, revealing a fragment of the model hidden inside the block. Managing to color the entire block of cubes correctly results in the entire model being revealed to the player, which can represent characters created by Nintendo for example. In Picross 3D Round 2, two new colors were added, as well as more complex models hidden in particular puzzles. The game supports the Amiibo protocol, thus the player can digitalize the figurines they own.

The mechanics of Her Majesty’s Spiffing are similar to what can be experienced in classic point-and-click adventure games – the creators have been visibly inspired by the games from the hands of developers such as Tim Shafer, Ron Gilbert, Gary Winnick, or Dave Grossman. They can be placed in a number of settings and conventions: from Wild West, through forests and farms, and up to medieval castles and arenas inspired by Feudal Japan. The player can modify the topography, as well as build objects and items. The game incorporates survival elements – survival in an yland requires food, shelter from the predators, and equipment. The fauna consists of the aforementioned predators, as well as domesticable animals, but the player can also choose to be accompanied by robots. We can explore the area on foot, or use various vehicles. Ylands can be played solo, or along with three friends. The game is characteristic for its colorful, angular graphics, while almost all the elements of the environment are destructible.

Strategy, Card Games, Science Fiction, TV Series, Singleplayer, Turn-based.

A turn-based strategy for mobile devices, developed by Ludia, based on the license of a classic SF series Battlestar Galactica. The story repeats the events seen in the TV series. We follow the fortunes of a star cruiser trying to find a new home for humanity, threatened by the overwhelming forces of the Cylons – an alien robot race which will not rest until all of mankind is extinct. When it comes to mechanics, Battlestar Galactica: Squadrons is a turn-based space strategy, sprinkled with elements found in card games. The player collects spaceships, using them to participate in space battles. Additionally, we can upgrade our fleet with parts salvaged from defeated enemy units. The individual ships have been balanced according to “rock-paper-scissors” rules: unit that is effective against a certain type of enemy will be completely useless against a different type.

Another edition of the most popular game series devoted to handball, developed by Bigben Interactive in cooperation with EKO Software. Mechanics-wise, Handball 17 does not deviate significantly from its predecessor. The developer didn’t bother with management and other non-sports elements and focused on the gameplay itself, putting emphasis on the incredibly important tactical layer. In the game, we can lead one of 82 licensed teams of the leading European handball leagues (e.g. French, German, or Spanish) to victory. Compared to the previous installment of the series, the production is characterized by visibly enhanced artificial intelligence which manifests both in the behavior of our rivals and our own players. Apart from that, the developers significantly revamped the controls and made them much more user-friendly for beginners thanks to numerous tutorials and hint systems.

A classic two-dimensional vertical shoot-em-all, taking place in a science-fiction universe. Xenogears was developed by an independent Finnish studio 10tons. The game takes us to 2032, where a conflict called the first galactic war forces humanity to defend its planet using an improvised fleet consisting of civilian space ships armed with various weaponry. As per the genre staples, the gameplay focuses around elimination of approaching hordes of enemies, interrupted from time to time with boss encounters that require more attention and a bit of tactical approach. Procedurally generated levels are definitely an interesting feature of the game – a level may play out different with every new playthrough, with the players unable to learn the enemies’ behavior by heart. Aside from that, the forces of humanity ale always represented by a wing – four fighters with different weaponry, with the player able to switch to a different unit depending on the type of enemy, or invite his friends to take over the remaining fighters in a local co-op mode.

Puzzle, Experimental/artistic, Comics, Noir, Singleplayer.

A prequel to the first Framed, an indie puccle game developed by Australian studio Loveshack Entertainment. The game once again relies on the setting of hardboiled novels, only this time set in Asia, where the protagonist has been framed for a crime he did not commit. He has no choice, but to clear his name before he gets caught by real criminals or the police. Framed 2 employs comics panel-based narrative, constructed in a way that will allow the protagonist to get out of trouble. Finding the correct solution might often be a true challenge – before we get it, we will see a few other versions of the story, each ending tragically for our hero. All of this is presented with interesting, comic book-like visuals inspired by the noir convention.

To make things easier, the hero can use his special ability called Astral Sight, which enables him to peek into the world of spirits. A side-scrolling horror/adventure game. Detention is a debut project of Taiwanese studio Red Candle Games. The action of the game takes place in Taiwan during the 1960s, in the middle of martial law that lasted 37 years. We are taken to Greenwood, a high-school placed in a mountainous area. The players assume the role of two students who discover that the school became inhabited by wicked monsters known from local legends. Their mission is to survive, as well as to discover the origins of the mysterious evil. Detention is built on exploration, gathering items, and solving riddles, all performed through a classic point-and-click interface. Our protagonists are practically helpless in open combat, so their only way to deal with the danger is to hide and lay traps, and escape if need be. The two-dimensional visuals are quite interesting, as the developers were inspired by the mythology of China and Taiwan, as well as Taoist and Buddhist beliefs.
