IGN: 7 / 10 by Leana Hafer

Aliens: Dark Descent is a fascinating, tense, inspired survival horror RTS with a few too many technical bugs to recommend it without caveats.

Full Review

Game Rant: 3 / 5 by Sam Stewart

Aliens: Dark Descent takes place in a setting that could have been a fantastic place to unveil some gripping sci-fi drama or lore, but instead it's basically just a point-and-click sequence. Even without tripping at the finish line, Aliens: Dark Descent has enough issues that prevent it from excelling. There's fun to be had here, with some great mechanical choices and tactical possibilities that keep the excitement high. It's not the weakest in the history of Alien games, but it's too close to the middle to be memorable.

The main pros of the game

  • Atmosphere and Authenticity: The game effectively captures the tense and oppressive atmosphere of the Aliens franchise, with excellent sound design and environmental details that heighten the sense of dread.
  • Squad-Based Tactics: Players lead a team of marines with distinct roles and traits, emphasizing strategic decision-making and careful management of resources and morale.
  • Real-Time Tactical Combat: The real-time gameplay with a tactical pause feature allows for dynamic combat that mirrors the chaos of the Aliens universe.
  • Stress and Sanity Mechanics: The psychological management of marines adds depth and realism, as players must monitor their squad's mental state to prevent breakdowns.
  • Lore Integration: The narrative aligns well with the franchise's themes, incorporating elements like Weyland-Yutani’s corporate menace and the lethal nature of xenomorphs.

The main cons of the game

  • Technical Issues: Users report numerous bugs, including pathfinding problems, UI glitches, and game-breaking crashes that disrupt gameplay.
  • Repetitive Environments: The maps can feel visually and structurally repetitive, leading to fatigue during extended play sessions.
  • Pacing Issues in Story: Although the plot starts strong, it loses momentum midway, with some narrative threads feeling underdeveloped.
  • Limited Strategic Layer: Outside of missions, the base management aspect is minimal, leaving players wanting more depth in resource planning and strategic control.
  • Voice Acting Quality: Some users criticized the voice acting as lacking, suggesting a need for better scripting or more varied voice options.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Deeper Base Management: Players expressed a desire for more complex resource management and strategic planning outside of missions.
  • Improved Save System: Some reviewers noted the frustration of losing progress due to bugs and the lack of a more forgiving save system during missions.
  • Variety in Voice Lines: Users mentioned the limited number of voice lines for marines, leading to repetitive dialogue during gameplay.
  • Enhanced Mission Design: Some players wished for more diverse and engaging missions, particularly avoiding certain unskippable or tedious objectives.
  • Increased Squad Size: A few users expressed a desire for the ability to command larger squads, similar to previous games in the franchise.

Summary

  • Overall, while Aliens: Dark Descent has been praised for its atmosphere, tactical gameplay, and fidelity to the franchise, it suffers from technical issues and a lack of depth in certain gameplay aspects that could enhance the overall experience.
