„After 1,000 hours, I'm still learning new stuff.” Helldivers 2 players discovered a hidden weapon option that no one knew about

That's why it's worth reading patch notes, at least in theory. That way, you won't be like the vast majority of Helldivers 2 players.

One of the key reasons games packed with content stay engaging for longer is the constant sense of discovery - there is always something new to uncover. An unknown tactic, a strange trick, or a hidden weapon mechanic that most players haven't stumbled upon yet. In the case of Helldivers 2, it's the latter - players recently uncovered a hidden feature of an anti-tank weapon that, surprisingly, has been part of the game for quite some time.

Patch descriptions are there for a reason

The "novelty" that players recently uncovered is that the MLS-4X Commando missile launcher can be used in a much more tactical way than the usual "aim, shoot, watch something go boom" approach. It turns out the launcher has a built-in laser that allows players to mark a target within their line of sight - after which they can hip-fire it in any direction. Even without aiming, the missile will automatically home in on the marked spot.

Judging by the comments, it seems that even seasoned veterans of the game were unaware of this feature.

I watched so many tier lists and no one said anything about this feature of commando.

THIS HAS TO BE NEW THIS PATCH, NO WAY THIS BEEN AN THING AND NOT ONE PERSON NOTICED UNTIL NOW!

However, if you visit the official wiki page dedicated to the weapon, you’ll find a clear explanation of how the automatic targeting system works. The "information" segment was updated in patch 1.001.100, released back in September 2024. This means that's when the "auto-aim" feature was added - or possibly even earlier.

So it turns out that for nearly a year, most players were using a weapon they didn't understand. Let’s hope that, from now on, more Helldivers will finally read the manual—and unleash their weapons’ full potential.
