Crusader Kings 3 Helped Paradox Break Financial Record

Crusader Kings 3 became such a big hit that it helped Paradox Interactive break its financial record. The Swedish company scored the best year in its history.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  1. More than 215 million dollars - that's more or less how much Paradox Interactive earned in 2020, which is the best result in the history of the company;
  2. Crusader Kings III was the main contributor to this success.

Today, Paradox Interactive released its financial report for 2020, which turned out to be the best period in the company's history. Compared to the previous several months, an increase in revenue of 39% was recorded. This gave a total of SEK 1.79 billion (over $215 million).

Both the hit Crusader Kings III and titles such as Empire of Sin, Hearts of Iron IV, Stellaris, Cities: Skylines or Europa Universalis IV contributed to this result. Ebba Ljungerud, CEO of Paradox Interactive, talked about this impressive financial result and the road to achieve it:

2020 was the best year in Paradox’s history, with strong growth in revenue, profits and players. Our established brands continue to develop and grow with new players and new content, and the successful launch of Crusader Kings III in the third quarter gave us a further boost. (...)

Crusader Kings III broke several of our previous records at release, in terms of both number of simultaneous players and copies sold. (...) It is a clear sign for us that we have succeeded in building on a brand through a sequel, which we will be able to further develop with new content for many years to come.

At the same time, our studio organization in particular has found it difficult to maintain the usual production pace. We have therefore chosen to postpone several planned but not communicated releases to ensure the right quality, which postpones the release dates during 2021.

For us, it is crucial that our games are well received by the players, so we always choose, if possible, to give our development studios the time required to achieve our quality goals.

Crusader Kings III has therefore proven to be a smash hit, taking Paradox Interactive to the pinnacle of financial success. Not quite sure you understand the phenomenon of this game? Then we strongly encourage you to read our review. You can find a link to it below.
