Cyberpunk 2077 dev says rocky launch made the game what it is today. Without it, the latest version of the RPG wouldn't have been made
The developer of Cyberpunk 2077 believes that without the disastrous release on PS4 and Xbox One, the game would not have made it to Nintendo Switch 2. In his opinion, the RPG has not only gained a second life, but will also stand the test of time.
The release of Cyberpunk 2077 probably still haunts some of the CD Projekt Red team at night, but after a few years, some employees find it easier to see the positive aspects of the disastrous launch. According to the Lead Engine Programmer, Charles Tremblay, the game "will stand the test of time." In an interview with The Mirror, the dev admitted that without the initial challenges, there wouldn't be a version of the game for the Nintendo Switch 2.
At the end side, if you think about it, if the success of the game would have been what we originally expected, would it be the same game that we're playing today? I don't think so. Which is weird when you think about it because of all the problems that we had, but then basically we ended up pushing so much energy in this game and I think now it's a much, much better game [...]. So I'm pretty happy about the result - admitted Charles Tremblay.
The main topic of the conversation, however, wasn't the 2020 release, but the port of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition to Nintendo Switch 2. Preparing the version for the hybrid console was a challenge that required limiting the available assets or reducing the level of detail. The language versions have also been slimmed down, and players have gained the option to download a selected localization.
[Nintendo was] quite upfront: this is going to be 64GB cartridge. With Phantom Liberty back then [the game] was at 90GB, and we wanted to have both together. As gamers, we all knew it's not very good to have the game as a code in the box, so we tried to figure out how it works. And one of my engineers, Adrian, is a physical collector, so it was what he really wanted.
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition was released on December 5, 2023, on PC and PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S consoles. Since June 5 of this year, the title is also available on Nintendo Switch 2.
