Steam's Would-be Hit Unlocks Character Classes as Response to Criticism

The developers of Dark and Darker have decided to unlock character classes, which until now had to be paid for. The move comes in response to negative reactions from the community.

Dark and Darker is a game that gets a lot of buzz from time to time. The online dungeon crawler from Ironmace first gained a lot of popularity in Early Access on Steam, only to be quickly banned from Valve's platform for allegedly appropriating another studio's assets.

Recently, a lot of buzz has been generated by decision by the developers, by which some character classes were available pretty much only for a fee (you could grind, but it was extremely time-consuming), which was supposed to induce players to spend money. Ironmace has reversed this decision and as of today it will be possible to play any of them for free.

Character classes for everyone

Early this afternoon, a hotfix, which unlocks all character classes has been released. The developers announced the introduction of the update on Discord, as can be seen in the screenshot below:

In addition, the developers apologized for the delay in returning the funds that have already been spent by players on unlocking classes. These will be returned with the next update.

In addition, the hotfix includes quite a few minor bug fixes, balance changes, etc.

Will players forgive the devs' attempt at a cash grab? We'll see. It's good that the latter at least admit their mistake.
