Devs Present Changes in ETS 2 and ATS Patch 1.40

SCS Software shared details regarding changes in Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator. Both games will receive a much improved lighting model in the upcoming patch 1.40.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  • Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator will receive a significant visual overhaul in update 1.40;
  • The lighting model will be improved in both titles;
  • The changes will cover many aspects, such as natural daylight, the appearance of weather phenomena, as well as artificial lighting sources.

Both Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator will get an improved lighting model in the latest update , such was the information posted by the developers from SCS Software on their blog yesterday while sharing more details with the community. Recently we could see the first comparisons of the new graphics in ETS 2. The new system will improve the lighting in both games.

The developers have focused on a realistic representation of different light sources on variable surfaces - there is even talk of "true HDR". The developers at SCS Software boast of "increased precision in accurately calculation of the game world".

The studio's YouTube channel shows off the effects of the new lighting model in update 1.40:

These buzzwords hide no more and no less, than the fact that the new lighting will improve the general appearance of ETS 2 and ATS. Natural light, which depends on the time of day and the current weather, will be changed, but also artificial light sources such as roadside lamps, town centre lamps, and petrol station neon lights.

Weather phenomena, such as fog or rain (adding reflections on the road) will also be presented more realistically. Better lighting is to cover not only the outside world, but also the interior of our cabin, which from now on is to respond more naturally to any changes in this area.

"Much like a modern camera in your mobile phone, we need to take all the rich values and variety of incoming light - sun or shade, early morning, high noon, dusk, or deep night - and "squish" or "expand" the values into the range appropriate for the screen. Our exposure emulation system has a critical impact on the final look and feel of the game - it's partly physics, but also partly about a subjective artistic feeling too."

The update introducing new lighting should be coming soon to ETS 2 and ATS. At the moment, it can be tested as part of the open beta on Steam. You can read more about the new lighting system here.

Want something new for ETS2? Try Project Japan.

Instead of just patiently waiting for the next official patch or add-on try Project Japan It’s a ridiculously ambitious mod that recreates Japan in ETS2. It delivers ultra-detailed map as well as changing traffic laws. Recently, after years of work, the authors have released version 1.0.0, which brings numerous improvements and additions. At this stage, the quality of this mod is closer to official DLC than a fan-made project.
