Baldur's Gate 3 has no shortage of extensive side plots. About one of them, many players didn't know until now.
It's already August, which means that Baldur’s Gate 3 is already two years old. You might think that so much time would be enough to uncover all the secrets of one of the best games of the last decade - and yet there are still elements that many fans have no idea about. How many of you got an offer to become a Harpist or became a famous troubadour?
Secrets are also doing well with side plot threads. What connects Grymforge and Gauntlet of Shar? It turns out that a lot.
Everything starts with an innocent thread on Reddit. Players were sharing facts about Baldur's Gate that they discovered exceptionally late, even if they were obvious to most. Then the author of the post cited the connection between Grymforge and Gauntlet of Sha. For those who haven't played the third installment in a while, just a reminder: we'll be moving from the hidden forge in Underdark to the cursed lands of shadows, finishing Act One.
The Gauntlet of Shar, on the other hand, is a location closely related to the themes of the Nightsong and Shadowheart, which we visit only in the middle of Act Two. Although we as players only get there after several dozen hours of play, the forge and the temple are not too far apart from each other. Moreover, even Halsin mentions this.

You can see the Gauntlet of Shar from the ledges inside the Grymforge. I know Halsin literally tells you to two are connected, that Ketheric Thorm specifically used the Underdark to safely traverse between the two locations. But for some reason, even after he tells you this, I just never connected the dots.
The view of the Gauntlet of Sha turns out to be a less obvious fact than anyone could assume, as shown by one of the most upvoted comments. The whole thing is a particularly intricate thread, completing the story not only of Ketheric, but also of Rafael and a few of his "victims."
The connection between Grymforge, the Gauntlet, Raphael, and the Selunite resistance also took me SEVERAL playthroughs to get the full scope of. If you’re still in Grymforge, talking to the Elder Rothe is also enlightening.
The story begins at the moment when Ketheric abandoned his faith in Selune in favor of Shar, using the connection between Grymforge and the Gauntlet to train the Dark Justiciars. Over time, this led to the Selunite resistance in Reithwin. Back then, the leader of the Masons' guild made a pact with Rafael, aiming to destroy Thorm's subordinates. In this way, Rafael drew up a contract with Yurgir (who was to kill all the justiciaries) and the Dark Justiciar Lyrthindor (who survived the following years in the form of rats, preventing Yurgir from regaining his freedom).
All these events led to Ketherica Thorm's failure and the release of the shadow curse, which in turn led to the main plotline in Act Two. If you also didn't know about the beginnings of the passage in Grymforge, we encourage you to explore more thoroughly in your next Baldur's Gate playthrough.
