Farigiraf Revealed in New Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Trailer

In a new fourteen-minute trailer for Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, a plethora of new features were shown alongside a brand new evolution of a classic Pokemon.

A new trailer for the upcoming Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet games showed off more details about the several different adventure routes that can be taken, as well as a much-needed evolution to one of the oldest Pokemon, Girafarig. This latest trailer is over fourteen minutes long, so if you want to watch for yourself, you can do that below.

Various trainers were shown exploring the brand-new Pladea Region, battling against wild Terastal Pokemon, using a machine to craft TMs, having a picnic, and taking photos. But one of the most exciting moments of the trailer is when Girafarig evolved into Farigiraf. It’s great that the new evolution maintains the palindrome nature of its original form. Farigiraf remains a Normal and Psychic-Type Pokemon, and has two new abilities. Cud Chew gives Farigiraf two uses of a held berry, the second use happening the turn after the first. Armor Tail is also a new ability that prevents opposing Pokemon from using priority moves like Fake Out or Sucker Punch.

This trailer also revealed that while rare Terastal Pokemon will appear in raid battles that you can take on with your friends, Terastal Pokemon can also appear in the wild. A trainer battled and caught a wild Jigglypuff that Terastallized into a Water Type during the battle. It’s not clear yet how rare this will be, or how the player is expected to find these wild Pokemon.

Pokemon Scarlet & Violet will also have a crafting system of sorts. Wild Pokemon will drop unique items when defeated or caught, and those items can be traded or crafted at a TM Machine to craft technical machines, the tools that allow Pokemon to learn new moves. The trailer showed that the TM for Icy Wind requires several “Snom Thread” and “Snover Berries” to create. This is an entirely new feature seeming to draw on elements of foraging from Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

Pokemon can now have picnics. It seems the player can set up a picnic table anywhere in Paldea and craft a sandwich with their Pokemon. Various ingredients will end up having mechanical benefits, such as making certain Pokemon easier to catch or increasing experience points. This feature seems to be replacing the camping feature introduced in Sword & Shield.

Finally, players can use a Rotom Phone to take photos. Players seem to be able to take both selfies to update their profile, and pictures of the world. It’s not clear yet if there is any actual gameplay benefit to taking photos, but it seems like a great way to share creative shots. Perhaps this is taking a note from New Pokemon Snap? The new Pokedex also appeared to show images of Pokemon in their natural habitat, which adds some great flavor to the usually somewhat simple and mechanical Pokedex.

With a little over a month left until Pokemon Scarlet & Violet releases on November 18th, for the Nintendo Switch, there probably aren’t many more trailers left. What did you think? What was the most exciting announcement? Leave a comment below letting us know your thoughts!
