First glimpse at the Diablo tabletop RPG corebook has surfaced from Gen Con

A Diablo tabletop RPG, in the vein of something like Dungeons & Dragons, has been in the works for a few years. Now we are getting a look at the core book.

Yesterday, a user attending Gen Con in Indianapolis shared the first update on the Diablo tabletop RPG since 2024. A user on Reddit shared an image of what appears to be the core rulebook for the TTRPG. At this time, we still don’t know much about how the game will play, but that could all change soon. The original reveal of the new interpretation of the popular video game series was supposed to take place at BlizzCon 2024, but that event was ultimately canceled. Hopefully, this is the first glimpse of more news to come.

The Diablo tabletop role-playing game might be close to a reveal

Almost all video games can trace their roots back to tabletop role-playing games, like the most popular one, Dungeons & Dragons. RPGs, in particular, like the Diablo series, draw many characteristics from the tabletop versions. One of the most popular modern RPGs, Baldur’s Gate 3, directly adapts from the massively popular 5th Edition of Dungeons & Dragons. It will be interesting to see how a video game adapts back to a tabletop version.

Blizzard does have a collaborator on this project: Glass Cannon Unplugged, which has adapted many other video games to a tabletop version, such as Apex Legends, Don’t Starve, Frostpunk, and Dying Light. But a key difference is that all of these previous projects are specifically board games, while the Diablo project is “The Board Game & Roleplaying Game,” via Glass Cannon Unplugged’s website.

Currently, there don’t appear to be any details about how the role-playing game will function. Will it model itself after Dungeons & Dragons, or move in a more original direction? From the product page, “Strike a path between the forces of Light and Darkness in a tug of war between sin and integrity.” This could just be setting the tone for the game, or it could hint at a feature. There are many tabletop games other than D&D, including some that use sanity as a trackable statistic, like Call of Cthulhu. For Diablo, a game that deals with similar horror concepts, it could be a key feature. Alternatively, the player could have to make crucial decisions on a spectrum between “sin” and “integrity,” which could change the role-play or the actual gameplay too.

For now, as Gen Con continues through the weekend, we’ll have to wait to see if any further information is revealed. The original poster has not shared more details about what the book contains, but that could be forthcoming sometime in the coming days or weeks.
