Nintendo Switch consoles likely to increase in price this weekend

After seven years on the market, the price of the Nintendo Switch is changing. But it's not a price drop, at least according to some possible leaks.

Today, Nintendo has confirmed that the original Nintendo Switch will “change.” The console from 2017, which now has an official sequel on the market, will likely cost more than it did at launch by the end of this weekend. Nintendo has not specified what the change will be, but there have been some potential leaks online that give us an idea of what to expect.

The original Nintendo Switch console price is increasing this weekend

The statement from Nintendo reads: “Pricing for the original Nintendo Switch family of systems and products will change in the United States based on market conditions, effective August 3, 2025.” This does not explicitly say that the price will increase or drop, but some potential leaks from Target’s website, spotted by Wario64 and shared on social media, suggest the possible price changes.

According to the image shared by Wario64, which appears to be a screenshot from Target’s website, the Switch, the Switch Lite, and the Switch OLED will all increase in price. The original Switch will increase from $300 to $340. The Switch Lite will increase from $200 to $230, and the OLED will increase from $350 to $400. Keep in mind that the prices for these consoles have never decreased. When the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017, it was priced at $300. Target’s website, at the time of writing, appears to have reverted to the original prices.

Thankfully, at least for now, the price increase will not impact the Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo said in the same statement, “Pricing for the Nintendo Switch 2 system, physical and digital Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 games, as well as Nintendo Switch Online memberships, will remain unchanged at this time.” But Nintendo was sure to cover their bases, adding: “…please note that price adjustments may be necessary in the future.” Which all but guarantees that the Switch 2 will eventually increase in price. If the original console won’t even decrease its price after over seven years on the market, why would the Switch 2?

Regarding other Nintendo products and accessories, they said: “Other Nintendo products, including certain Nintendo Switch 2 accessories, select amiibo, and the Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo, will also see adjustment.” This could perhaps be a further increase from the price raises already seen earlier this year for many Switch 2 accessories.

This news arrives as the U.S. President begins discussing and rolling out tariffs again. This was what originally delayed pre-orders in the U.S. and Canada earlier this year. Nintendo might call it “market conditions,” but this is most likely what they really mean. This is such a minor symptom of the larger problem within U.S. politics, and it won’t go away unless something changes.
