Released this January Forspoken from Luminous Productions was met with a verymixed welcome both among gamers and reviewers. Given the poor reception of the game, the more surprising news for the gaming community was the budget of Forspoken. According to the source, it was said to have amounted to more than $100 million.
The information can be found on the LinkedIn profile belonging to Allison Rymer (the game's screenwriter). Describing her experience in the industry, Rymer mentions:
"[I] was responsible for the storyline of Forspoken, which cost more than $100 million to make."
The consequences of failure may be even more lamentable
The information about the game's budget seems all the more shocking if we look at it in the context of the recently published unflattering financial report of the publisher - Square Enix.
After its publication, the president of the company spoke out, clearly signalling that the sales and reception of Forspoken have not lived up to corporate expectations, and this could result in potential financial problems for the company in the future.
Financial flop of Forspoken also had unpleasant consequences for the developer Luminous Productions. Some time ago we learned that the studio will cease operations in its current form and will be integrated into the structures of Square Enix.
The community in no small shock
The gaming community also did not remain indifferent to the information about the game's budget. In a thread on Twitter, voices full of surprise quickly began to appear.
One user commented on the matter:
"Did they accidentally add one "0" too much? There is no way this game has a 100 million [dollar] budget. Has Square gone crazy?," asks (ES) Ozymandias
Although the final result of the work on Forspoken turned out to be disappointing, it should be remembered that the development of AAA games involves enormous costs, which are likely to only increase as the industry grows. All the more risky is the development process itself, which, in the case of unfulfilled expectations, can entail serious financial consequences.
