Update #2

Axios reportsthat the cancelled sequel to Immortals: Fenyx Rising was supposed to be inspired by Elden Ring and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. The game's open world would offer Polynesia-inspired archipelagos with more realistic graphics. In addition, it would lack a traditional quest list, enabling us to explore the world like in Elden Ring. Overall, it would be a very unusual item by Ubisoft's current standards.

Update #1 (July 26)

Ubisoft has sent an official message to VGC on the matter. Its full content is presented:

"As part of our global strategy, we are redirecting and redeploying some creative teams and resources at the Quebec studio to other unannounced projects. The experience and technologies developed by these teams will serve as a springboard for the development of these key projects focused on our largest brands. We have nothing more to report at this time."

Original message (July 26, 2023)

I bring bad news for those waiting for the announcement of the sequel to Immortals: Fenyx Rising. As reported by VGC - citing its own sources - the sequel to this 2020 action adventure game was reportedly been canceled at an early stage of work.

The decision was supposedly dictated by Ubisoft's poor financial situation, which we described in more detail in this news. In an attempt to remedy it, this French company decided to focus on its biggest brands (that's why we get at least six installments of the Assassin's Creed series...), and gave up on the smaller ones.

Interestingly enough, Immortals was supposed to launch a new IP - at least that's what was suggested at one time by popular industry journalist Jeff Grubb. He reported that the creators of the original - Ubisoft Quebec - are working on a project with the working name Oxygen, allegedly a sequel to Immortals: Fenyx Rising, meant to take on Polynesian mythology (the base game was based on Greek beliefs, while the second of the three DLCs that it received - on Chinese ones).

Project Oxygen was reportedly canceled in early July. It is worth recalling that earlier this year Ubisoft canceled three other games. Also in their case, savings were said to be behind the decision of the French.

Importantly, however, the nail in the coffin of the potential series may have turned out to be unsatisfactory sales of Immortals: Fenyx Rising. According to VGC's sources, the title sold a considerable number of copies, but gamers were said to have often bought it at a discounted price. In Europe, it reportedly achieved a score 70% worse than that of Assassin's Creed: Valhalla in the same period. The fact that both games were released a month apart certainly didn't help Immortals either.

Finally, I will mention that if you want to check out the game, you can do so as part of PC/Xbox Game Pass, PS Plus Extra and Ubisoft+. Meanwhile, looking for an item that makes use of Polynesian mythology (and more), you should be interested in Ghostlore, presented in more detail here.
