James Gunn Frankly on AI: 'I'm an Old-fashioned SF Guy
The director decided to share his thoughts on the discussion surrounding artificial intelligence in the movie industry. Has he himself used AI to make his films?
Artificial intelligence is becoming a topic of debate in various creative industries, including filmmaking. As reported by TheDirect, in an interview during a press conference for the third installment of Guardians of the Galaxy, director and screenwriter James Gunn shared his thoughts on the use of artificial intelligence in today's film industry. Confirming that artificial intelligence was not involved in the production of his latest film from the Marvel universe, he admitted that he himself does not know much about the technology and feels somewhat distanced from it. In addition, he expressed his enthusiasm for the use of AI in other areas of life.
"AI was not part of production process. To be honest, I don't know much about AI, I've never used Chat GPT or anything like it. I approach it cautiously, as many people do, but I'm also very excited about what it means for medicine, law enforcement and the many areas of life in which it can help us [...].
I'm an old-fashioned science fiction guy, I believe we can create a better world through technology. I believe it's possible. It's really just a matter of us focusing on what's most important to us, as Guardians of the Galaxy movies do [...]. We can make a great movie-spectacle with mutual love and interpersonal relationships as the basis of the plot, and I want people to go to theaters and leave feeling that the person they sat next to is better than before they went in. I think artificial intelligence can be used for good purposes and I hope it doesn't replace us in everything in a few years. We'll see."
With advances in the movie industry, which is constantly introducing new and innovative production techniques, artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly valuable tool. Today, many filmmakers are using AI to improve and accelerate creative processes, such as script writing and visual effect creation. There is certainly a long way to go before the aforementioned technology becomes a widely used tool for Hollywood productions.
With his new title - co-managing DC Studios - as well as his role as writer and director of Superman: Legacy, James Gunn will have plenty of opportunities to follow the development and potential capabilities of artificial intelligence in the coming years.
