Microsoft published a list of jobs that will be affected by AI. Internet users are finding artificial intelligence at work in it

Microsoft published a list of jobs that are expected to disappear due to AI or survive the clash with the new technology. Internet users pointed out that the juxtaposition was probably created by artificial intelligence.

Microsoft continues to experiment with artificial intelligence. Satya Nadella, the company’s CEO, stated that Microsoft is thriving thanks to AI - though not without controversy. It seems Microsoft has once again turned to new technology. This time, a list of professions most at risk from AI was generated. Many online users believe Microsoft relied on AI to create it.

Employees are worried about their jobs, and some companies - like Duolingo - have already started replacing staff with AI. Which jobs are most at risk? This is highlighted in the study Working with AI: Measuring the Occupational Implications of Generative AI by Microsoft.

Reddit

The report lists 40 professions, highlighting those most at risk of AI replacement and those least likely to be replaced by new technology. On the r/ChatGPT subreddit, users quickly pointed out that the lists probably weren’t made by a human, since the selection of professions in each category seemed pretty odd.

These lists make so little sense, it's not worth even discussing them seriously. Just one example:

  1. Archivist (listed as easiest to replace) - has to work with lots of old, non-standard, sometimes incomplete, and contradictory documentation. A lot of the time, these will be physical documents as well, organised according to an obscure system designed 50 years ago. Cost of error: potentially very high depending on the documents. LLM are very likely to hallucinate on these kinds of requests, too.
  2. Dishwasher (listed as hardest to replace) – the main part of the process is literally already automated with an appliance of the same name. Loading and unloading dishwashers is pretty trivial, and robots already exist in pre-production that can do this easily.

The study's authors didn't mean to study workers' replaceability

That said, not everyone agrees. One of the commenters pointed out that the post’s author either misunderstood or intentionally misrepresented the study’s findings. It wasn't about AI taking over entire professions. The goal was to find out in which professions AI can serve as a tool for workers.

Another user agreed that the conclusions in the Reddit post were incorrect, with the study’s authors denying them as well. The study explains that it is incorrect to assume a given profession can be fully replaced by artificial intelligence. The researchers didn’t consider this outcome and didn’t publish any definitive conclusions about AI’s overall impact on the industry. They didn’t do so because, as they explained, these impacts are difficult to evaluate and often unintuitive.

The whole discussion shows that AI and its impact on industries worldwide is an emotional and highly debated topic. Even with the current AI boom, it’s unclear how many companies in the field will survive. Some say that only 1% of companies will survive once the AI bubble bursts.
