Not Just Apple Card - Google Wants its Own Payment Card

Google is probably working on its own payment card, following the idea behind Apple Card. Visualizations of a new, physical form of payment have leaked into the web.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  1. Perhaps soon it will be possible to put a piece of plastic with the Google logo in our wallets;
  2. Google's physical card is likely to be a debit card, handle contactless and online payments.

Apple device owners can use Apple Pay as well as a physical Apple Card associated with the app. According to TechCrunch, Google has decided to offer its users similar opportunities. The completely virtual Google Pay system will have its own tangible extension, which can even become its main component. The new solution will increase the shopping opportunities by areas previously unavailable. This will also give Google a better insight into consumer spending.

The physical card itself may be something similar to the Apple Card, but there are some important differences. First of all, it will probably not be a full fledged credit card like Apple's solution, but rather a debit card. The visualization shows that the basic payment service provider will be Visa, but it is not excluded that we will see the logo of other companies, e.g. Mastercard, on the card. Apart from that, the name of the affiliate bank will be displayed on the card, but as far as its choice is concerned, nothing is known yet. The microprocessor will handle contactless payments, and an individual number will enable us to shop online.

The physical card will be an extension of Google Pay

The card will probably work closely with Google applications. This would offer the possiblity of putting our shopping history on the map and many security features, including easy blocking in Google Pay. The top of the card visualization contains a unique round QR code. It may contain data for optical reading by applications or readers in stores. Currently, nothing is known about the benefits of using the card, such as the numerous cashback options offered by Apple Card.

Since the message is based on leaks, the current state of knowledge does not allow us to determine even an approximate release date of the new service. We will wait a little bit longer before we put a piece of plastic with Google logo in our wallets. Let us also remind that this is not Google's first approach to the subject of payment cards. For some time it was possible to receive such physical form for Google Wallet, but in 2016 this option was abandoned. The new payment card is not a continuation of this idea but a completely new solution. Let's hope that the second approach will have more luck.
