Today, MinnMax shared a rapid-fire interview with Hideki Kamiya, director of the upcoming Okami sequel, as well as many other classic action games like the Bayonetta series, Viewtiful Joe, and the original Resident Evil 2. Kamiya left Capcom in 2006 to form PlatinumGames but announced his return to Capcom at last year’s Game Awards showcase to direct the unnamed Okami sequel. I highly recommend watching the full interview, as MinnMax’s founder, Ben Hanson, covers many of Kamiya’s greatest hits while also asking some great personal questions about how cool Kamiya is, and whether his YouTube channel is better than Masahiro Sakurai’s.

Hideki Kamiya answers questions about the Okami sequel in new rapid-fire interview

Okami was originally released in 2006 and has since been released in HD versions on most modern consoles. Last December, at the Game Awards, the show closed out with some unexpected announcements, and the Okami sequel might have been the most surprising. Fans of the game have waited nearly twenty years to learn about this sequel, and few expected it ever to happen. Kamiya left Capcom shortly after Okami, and after finding so much success with PlatinumGames, no one ever expected him to return to Capcom.

The interview covered a lot of ground, but Kamiya did answer several questions about the Okami sequel. Hanson asked how Kamiya was feeling about the Okami sequel right now, to which the game director responded with, “I’m just very happy to be given the opportunity to make it.” He also said he’s not feeling “too worried” about deadlines right now. There is no release year yet for this Okami sequel, so don’t expect to learn more about it anytime soon.

Hanson also asked if Kamiya would be sticking to an original vision for the Okami sequel that he came up with twenty years ago while working on the original. Kamiya responded, “Sure. In a sense, yes. But, I actually can’t remember a lot of the stuff I thought about twenty years ago. So I’ll have to remember what that is, and then inject current ideas into it.” An interesting side conversation had Kamiya talking about the Switch 2. According to the interview, he has yet to even hold the new Nintendo console, but is intrigued by the new mouse functionality of the Joy-Cons, saying, “The mouse opens up a lot of options for fun gameplay, so I’m pretty interested in it.” The possible future where the Okami sequel launches for the Switch 2 and makes use of its mouse functions for the brush mechanic is one I want to live in.

Kamiya also thought Okami would be the best game of his that could be adapted into a film, which I can’t help but be excited by. As a fan of the original Okami back in 2006, I look forward to learning more about this sequel, but I know I will have to be patient.
