PS5 and Xbox Series X May Support Ultrawide 21:9 Screens

It looks like future consoles will support the 21:9 aspect ratio. Philips has designed a new ultrawide monitor just for them.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  • Next-gen consoles are likely to support screens with 21:9 aspect ratio;
  • The Philips 345M1CR Momentum has been specifically designed for new consoles and features an ultrawide 21:9 screen.

The console developers have announced that both Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will display images at very high frame rates at crazy resolutions. However, we don't know what about the 21:9 ultra-wide format. Although the manufacturers don't provide this information, some conclusions can be drawn from the peripheral market. Philips presented a new ultra-wide panoramic monitor, designed specifically for console players.

The Philips 345M1CR Momentum, as the new device is named, is a 34-inch monitor with an ultrawide 21:9 aspect ratio. Its native resolution is 3440 x 1440 pixels at a maximum refresh rate of 144 Hz. Most importantly, however, the monitor is designed for next generation consoles. This may mean that at least one of them will support the 21:9 aspect ration. Although this possibility has not been officially confirmed, console peripheral manufacturers need to have more info of their specs to prepare their equipment for release.
