PS5 Becomes the Best-selling Console in US History

The NPD Group reports that the PlayStation 5 is now the best-selling console in U.S. history when considering total sales in USD during the first four months after its debut on the market.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  1. PS5 is now the best-selling console in US history when total sales in USD are taken into account;
  2. Sony plans to send 14.8 million consoles to stores by the end of March 2021.

PlayStation 5 is the fastest-selling console in US history when considering total sales in USD during its first four months on the market. The results, published by NPD Group analyst Mat Piscatella, show that despite the shortages, Sony can still be pleased with the performance of their latest console.

Unfortunately, Piscatella didn't reveal exactly which results he was referring to. The latest information on PS5 sales comes directly from Sony and reveals that consumers have purchased over 4.5 million consoles by the end of 2020. The goal of the Japanese corporation is 14.8 million PlayStation 5 consoles sold by the end of March 2021.

That may be hard to achieve, however, due to continued hardware shortages in stores, although the situation has improved somewhat recently. But with the head of PlayStation saying outright that he doesn't expect the availability issue to be resolved until 2022, the situation is more serious than some may think.

To end on an interesting note, the PS5 is not the all-time best-selling console in the US after all. This title invariably belongs to Nintendo Switch, which, as in previous months, was the best-selling console of February both when we take into account the total sales in dollars and number of consoles
