Before the release of Helldivers 2, it was impossible to foresee that this modest shooter from Arrowhead Studio would be capable of rivaling much larger games in terms of popularity. In fact, the sequel to the series that started in 2015 not only doesn't emerge from this battle defeated, but actually outmaneuvers its rivals.

As proof of these words, it's enough to recall that the record of simultaneously active Helldivers 2 players on Steam is 458,709 people. What's more, the popularity of the title - unlike many other games - doesn't begin to decline rapidly over time.

So, the question is how the above findings reflect in the overall number of copies of Helldivers 2 sold. Although Sony has consistently remained silent on this issue, according to TD Cowen investment bank analyst Doug Creutz (via Bloomberg), this cooperative shooter "performed well ahead of expectations" of its developers and has already found over 8 million buyers. The specialist believes that this number will increase every week.

After solving the server problems that Helldivers 2 suffered after its release, Arrowhead's CEO, Johan Pilestedt, announced that the studio can now focus on improving the title and working on new content.

One of the new elements may be the Illuminati -- a faction that appeared in the first installment of Helldivers. While the Arrowhead team hasn't confirmed this information, vigilant players who accessed the files of the second installment found clues suggesting the imminent arrival of this faction (via GamingBolt).
