SEGA Pitches Dreamcast Mini

SEGA is thinking about creating the Dreamcaster Mini. However, if the iconic device really is to get a new version, we will have to wait for it a little bit.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  1. SEGA is thinking about constructing more miniature consoles.
  2. In an interview for Famitsu, Yosuke Okunari admitted that one of the projects could be Dreamcast Mini.
  3. However, if such device is made, we may have to wait for it a bit.

Sega's next miniature console may be Dreamcast. The information that suggests such a move comes from Sega's Yosuke Okunari's interview for Famitsu magazine, who deals with miniature consoles in Japanese branch of Sega. The most interesting fragments were translated by Siliconera.

"For the next Mini, we are considering everything that has been imagined by everyone. (...) Of course, it doesn’t mean we can realize all of them. (...)If I have to say some names, it could be an SG-1000 Mini or a Dreamcast Mini…"

The name of the last console constructed by Sega does not appear without reason. The players are asking for a miniature version of Dreamcast Mini since the fashion for refreshing old consoles took over the market. Why not the SG-1000 mentioned by Okunari? Sega's first console is a completely niche product and would not attract as much interest as the iconic Dreamcast.

In the course of the conversation with Famitsu's editorial team, an information appeared, which will immediately cool down the warm heads of Sega fans.

"The projects are moved by a substantial amount of money, so we’re working first on the one that, realistically speaking, has the highest possibility. (...)The Game Gear Micro is only sold domestically in Japan. When we do the next one, I feel like the project scope will be much bigger as we gaze upon the world. So we won’t be able to release it at this time the next year or two years. (...) We can’t make it that quickly."

Okunari ended the last sentence with laugh, so we shouldn't treat the timeframe too seriously. Nevertheless, preparing a good Dreamcaster emulation will take time. However, for many titles from the library of this console, it will be worth the wait. So let's keep our fingers crossed for an imminent announcement of Dreamcast Mini and not too distant release.

The choice of games on such device will also be an issue. SoulCalibur is a must. I'd also like to see both installments of the Power Stone series, Skies of Arcadia and Crazy Taxi. What are your favorites?
