Sins of Solar Empire 2 Looks Promising But Not Everyone Will be Happy

The space strategy game, popular years ago, is back. Sins of a Solar Empire 2 is expected to be a bigger, more elaborate and prettier game than the first part. For some players, however, the lack of a Steam version may be a problem.

Stardock and Ironclad Games gave us a pleasant surprise by announcing Sins of a Solar Empire II, a continuation of the popular space strategy from 2008.

  1. The sequel is heading for PC only.
  2. The game will debut in early access on October 27 this year.
  3. The Early Access phase is expected to last about a year.
  4. The game will be sold exclusively on Epic Games Store, at least during the early access period.

The game will be set in a new galaxy, but three familiar races will return (TEC, Advent and Vasar) and each will be available in loyalist and rebel variants, like in Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion.

Compared to the first part, the 4X elements of managing the galactic empire will be significantly expanded. The game world is to be more dynamic and realistic. Systems will have stars around which planets are to orbit, often having their own moons. The fact that these objects will be movable will strongly change the gameplay and is expected to require careful planning during conquests, enabling us to take advantage of changing space routes to gain an advantage over our opponent.

The heart of the gameplay will remain tactical interstellar skirmishes. Technological advances mean that the game will be able to simulate each deck gun and fired missile separately. Not only does this look better than in the original, but it opens up new possibilities in battles - so, for example, it will be possible to cover the firing line of a particular cannon with a large ship, thus protecting a more fragile craft.

In general, ship positioning is to play a much greater role. Also abandoned is the simple system whereby given units are strong against one type of enemy and weak against another. Now this balance will be determined by mounted systems and armor.

The developers considered introducing a story campaign, but ultimately decided that the brand's main strength is purely sandbox gameplay against AI or other players. We also houldn't expect full 3D battles, like in Homeworld. The scale of skirmishes will be so large that it would be difficult for players to handle, especially when they have to manage an entire empire in parallel.
