Starfield - Bethesda Bets on NASA-punk

Starfield, known to some as „space Skyrim,” is expected to capture players' attention with a style dubbed „NASA-punk.” The new game from Bethesda Game Studios will rely heavily on realism.

Starfield - new work of Bethesda Game Studios - may introduce some freshness to the portfolio of the creators responsible for The Elder Scrolls or Fallout. According to the developers, the key to this is the unique style of the game, which they call "NASA-punk".

According to the vision of the developers, Starfield will show the future of space travel in a relatively realistic way. The premise of the new style is to develop a world that we can expect to see in the future, given the current level of science and technology.

"NASA-punk" and its influence on Starfield

Last year, game director Todd Howard described the studio's new title as "space Skyrim", in which realistic technology will play an important role. To prove his point, he even traveled to SpaceX for inspiration.. So it's not hard to conclude that Starfield will be closer to the The Martian than Star Wars.

In an interview with Xbox Wire Istvan Pely and Rick Vicens from Bethesda Game Studios talked about the significance of the term "NASA-punk" for the entire project. Thanks to it, the developers managed to set a course and establish a uniform style, around which the entire game will be built.

Istvan Pely, lead artist

“Early on in this project when we were trying to establish the overall aesthetic of this game, we sort of coined the term ‘NASA-Punk’ to describe a sci-fi universe that’s a little more grounded and relatable. We wanted a very realistic take. You can draw a line from current-day space technology and extrapolate from there into the future so it’s believable and relatable.”

Rick Vicens, lead animator

“What’s really interesting is how much we all latched onto that concept. When you said NASA-Punk, the Art team could instantly take those two words and make them work. It was just the perfect term for our art direction and keeping everyone in same flow and working with a consistent style. For me, it just clicked. At the start of the project, I think that term was critical for us.”

The future of Starfield - release date and availability

According to the announcements Starfield should debut on November 11, 2022 on PC and Xbox Series S/X, as well as in Game Pass.

For Bethesda, it will certainly be a unique launch, because - as the developers often emphasize - for the first time in 25 years it is creating a completely new title, unrelated to its previous IPs. Moreover, it does it under the wings of Xbox Game Studios headed by Phil Spencer, who believes in the huge success of Starfield.
