After the phenomenal success of Baldur's Gate 3 Starfield is the biggest release and a candidate for the title of the best RPG of 2023. Although we'll have to wait until next month for its debut, the developers are reminding us about the title by revealing more information. They include a timeline for Starfield, which presents the events preceding the game's plot.

The action of the game will begin in 2330, but the timeline available on the game's official website begins much earlier, starting with the colonization of Mars in 2050.

  • 106 years later, humanity finally reaches Alpha Centauri - the closest star to Earth with a planet of its own (4.37 billion light years away from the solar system). In the same decade the United Colonies are founded (or UC for short; 2159).
  • In 2188, the Freestar Collective is officially formed (or FC for short).
  • After the end of the century, the Narion War between UC and FC occurs. The name comes from the Narion system, which joined the Collective under pressure from the United Colonies. Only in 2216, under public pressure, is a truce signed.
  • The conflict erupts anew in the form of the Colony Wars, ending in 2310 after the Battle of Cheyenne, where FC won.

Meanwhile (in 2275), Sebastian Banks founds Constellation - an elite organization dedicated to uncovering the secrets of the Milky Way, which the players will join at the beginning of the adventure with Starfield.

  1. 35 years later, Constellation comes into possession of the first artifact, which is quickly forgotten. It is not until 2326 that it is rediscovered by Barrett, who realizes the significance of the find.
  2. Throughout this time, more members join the organization: the aforementioned Barrett, Sarah Morgan (once the youngest commander of the Corps of Navigators of the Unified Colonies), Walter Stroud (who becomes Constellation's main sponsor), Vladimir Sall (a notorious pirate), Matteo Khatri (a theologian), Noel (a scientist), Sam and Cora Coe (the Guardian of the Collective and his daughter) and Andreja.
  3. In 2328, Constellation acquires a space station and transforms it into a huge galactic scanner, soon dubbed as The Eye.

This brief overview of the story background has sparked player enthusiasm (via Reddit). Especially since we apparently learned the name of the fourth companion, which so far has not been mentioned in other official materials.

Of course, the community also quickly began speculating about how the past of the virtual universe of Starfield will affect what we will see in the course of the game. Especially since the developers didn't elaborate much on some points - as if they wanted to hide key information from the fans (or at least that's what the latter claim). Let's also remember that the game is to include quite a lot of minor stories that may be related to past events.

So it's hardly surprising that gamers are looking forward to the debut of Bethesda's new RPG. Even after a recent comments by Pete Hines, who ordered a quiet wait for the release of Starfield.

Bethesda's vice president of marketing and communications thus responded to the game having gone gold. After all Starfield will be released on September 6 and one would expect that confirmation of completion should come any minute now. Nevertheless, Hines assured that he has an excellent team and the developers "know what they're doing" (via Twitter).
