Valve Shows Off Steam Deck's Brilliant Gyroscope Performance

Valve showed off the ingenious gyroscope system in Steam Deck. Together with analog knobs and trackpads, it is supposed to provide an experience close to mouse and keyboard controls.

One of the most important events in recent weeks turned out to be the announcement of Steam Deck. Those interested in this portable device should also be interested in a video that shows how the console's controls will work.

The video was published by IGN, showing a Valve's employee demonstrate an ingenious solution that should significantly enhance the fun. Steam Deck will enable us to control games using traditional gamepad buttons and analog knobs, two trackpads and a gyroscope. All this combined should offer a comfortable system that will work well even in games designed for mouse control. What's interesting, however, is that the gyroscope will only work if the player touches the analogue knobs or trackpads.

This way we won't mess up the settings in the game, for example when changing the position on the couch. If necessary, we can also center the aiming simply by letting go of the knobs and taking our fingers off the trackpads.

The simultaneous use of three control methods may seem complicated at first, but Steam Deck's early testers claim that players quickly get used to it, and the possibilities it offers are close to what a mouse and keyboard would allow for. In FPS games, for example, you'll use the analogs to move your character and the trackpad to aim, while using the gyroscope to adjust your aim. In this way, it will be possible to easily aim at the head of the enemy who moves across the screen, which is hard to achieve with only a trackpad and analog.

Steam Deck can be reserved since two weeks. Shipping of hardware will begin in December 2021. Unfortunately, all copies prepared for this year have sold out like hot cakes. If you make a reservation today, you will have to wait until the second quarter of next year.
