Original message
Studio Spiders, known for The Technomancer and Greedfall, once again delivers an RPG, this time spicing it up with soulslike sauce. Steelrising - because that's the title in question - was supposed to be another candidate to win the hearts of FromSoftware and soulslike fans. Comparisons were made, of course, to such games as Bloodborne or various parts of the Souls series, but like in the case of another recently released title - Thymesia - the game did not fully live up to expectations. The first reviews of critics suggest that title is simply mediocre, but there are several high marks.
Expectations were higher
Average ratings on Metacritic for the PlayStation 5 version is 71/100 points. The title aspires to compete with the biggest giants of the genre, but most reviewers suggest that the game is not very demanding and will not challenge soulslike veterans in any way. This also means that Steelrising could be a good starter title for newcomers looking to begin their adventure with the genre. The character designs and atmosphere have been praised, and the typically souls-like combat system has been executed correctly. Nevertheless, the storyline does not hold the player's attention, and Steelrising does not offer anything that would make the game stand out from other similar items. It also doesn't help that quite a few critics complain about the game's technical layer.
"Steelrising is Spiders Studio's best game to date, but too many bugs and technical issues keep it from being great. The combat system remains engaging and enjoyable throughout, and the unique mechanical approach to the French Revolution will make the title live longer in the memory than previous FromSoftware tributes," writes PushSquare, rated 70/100 on Metacritic
"Steelrising is a familiar game with enough content to stand on its own two feet. It's not a revolution yet, but it could be the start of one," writes Gfinity, rated 70/100 on Metacritic
"Steelrising is an incredibly unique take on the French Revolution, with brilliant environments and character designs, but it's simply not enough to make it stand out from other titles in the genre" declares GameGrin, rated 70/100 on Metacritic
Launching tomorrow
Steelrising will debut on September 8 and everyone will be able to check out the title for themselves. The game will be available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
