The Last of Us 2 With More GotY Titles Than The Witcher 3

The Last of Us: Part 2 dethroned The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Naughty Dog's latest PS4-exclusive boasts the most awards in the game of the year category in history.

IN SHORT:
  1. The Last of Us: Part 2 has so far won 261 GotY titles;
  2. Naughty Dog's work bested The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt by one award.

Since yesterday,The Last of Us: Part 2 can boast of the highest number of awards in the category of game of the year. Naughty Dog's game overtook the previous leader - The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which won 260 such awards in 2015.

For several years now, www.gameawards.net has been preparing a list of games that win the title of the best game of the year. The Last of Us: Part 2 has so far collected 261 awards (the number may still increase) - 171 come from industry media, and 91 awards are readers' choices. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which dropped to second place, boasts 172 awards from the media and 88 from gamers (260 total).

As for the past year, second place goes to Hades with 55 awards, and third to Ghost of Tsushima, which has been named the best game of 2020 50 times. Cyberpunk 2077 so far boasts 26 awards.

How do the winners from previous years look?

As we can see from the above list, over the years more and more industry media started giving out their awards for the best game of the year. Readers also had their say, and as a result, new titles received far more awards than the hits from over a decade ago.
