Valheim - black screen when joining server or launching

In this guide we will tell you what can be done to fix the black screen in the game Valheim. There are several ways to solve this problem. We will present the best ones.

Valheim is a game in early access. This means that it is constantly being worked on and a lot is changing in it. However, developing the product does not always work best for its stability. That's why sometimes players experience various bugs. One of them is the black screen. In this text we will share some tips on how to deal with it.

Windowed mode

Valheim often does not work well with full screen mode. Therefore, one solution to the black screen problem is to play in windowed mode. You can do this with the combination - alt + enter.

Disable antivirus

If you can't connect to the server, one of the problems could be your antivirus blocking the game. Try deactivating it temporarily. Remember to be careful at this point, as you will be left without protection.

Update server

Valheim is a game that is still under development. So it is not surprising that it keeps getting new updates. As reported by the community, some of them may make it impossible to connect to the server. If your game is up to date and the server is not, you may experience a black screen. So it is worth checking this.

Disabling FreeSync

  1. Press the right mouse button on the desktop and select “AMD Radeon Settings”;
  2. Open „Display”;
  3. Disable FreeSync.

Disabling V-Sync (AMD)

  1. Right-click on the desktop and select “AMD Radeon Settings”;
  2. Select “Gaming / Global settings”;
  3. Find “Wait for Vertical Refresh” and use the drop-down button - disable it.
