Today, we finally have more news on the Wonder Woman game teased at the 2021 Game Awards. The good news is it still exists and is being worked on. The bad news is that the game has already cost $100 million and has been rebooted as recently as early last year. Monolith Productions, the developers of the popular Lord of the Rings series, Shadow of Mordor, are the team behind this, with WB Games publishing.

Three years after Wonder Woman game announcement, development is more than troubled

In a report from Bloomberg, reporter Jason Schreier shared information on many of the projects WB Games studios are working on. This included the potentially exciting news that Rocksteady, the team behind the Arkham games, is working on a single-player Batman game again after a rough few years with Suicide Squad. This is not shocking news from WB Games, which has shut down further development on both Suicide Squad and the platform fighter MultiVersus within the last few weeks.

Sometime early last year, the development of Wonder Woman was rebooted, with the game changing directors. It’s not clear what that means for the game. Though with the way Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav has talked about games in the past, it could always mean that Wonder Woman will turn into some kind of live-service game full of microtransactions and battle passes. Hopefully this is not the case.

The bright spot for WB Games recently has been Harry Potter, with 2023’s Hogwarts Legacy becoming the best-selling game of that year. There are reports of Warner Bros. intention to support that game, as well as work on a sequel.

If Wonder Woman was rebooted at the beginning of 2024, as it has been reported, then it will likely be years before we learn more about the game., if it ever does see the light of day. It could easily be another four or five years before this game is released to the public

WB Games is one of many large publishers to be struggling lately. Ubisoft is relying heavily on the upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Shadows after several underperforming titles. EA recently reported underwhelming results from Dragon Age: The Veilguard and EA Sports FC 25. It will be interesting to keep an eye on what happens to these major AAA game publishers over the next few years.
