Are you ready for Cookie Jam questions? Once again, we are tasked with answering some culinary inquiries. It is a change of pace after last week’s musical theme. However, after looking at the first Buzzwords, I can tell you that it will be a struggle, as this week inquiries seem to be difficult. “Jewish baked casserole” is no exception. At least I had a problem with it. If you are like me, don’t worry, as we are here to help.
As in the case of “Pod vegetable, often in gumbo”, to answer this question we have to know what the dish from the hint is, here it is casserole. Casserole (dish) takes its name from the pan in which it is baked in the oven. Many countries has its own casserole. Often it takes a form of baked meat (or fish), vegetables and a little bit of starch (potatoes, flour etc.), So, now that we know this, let’s answer the proper question:
If you are wondering what Kugel is, we can answer that! As the hint suggests, it is a Jewish casserole. The dish is made of potatoes / egg noodles (lokshen) and is often prepared for celebrations such as Shabbat or holidays. The name Kugel comes from German and means sphere (via Wikipedia). Probably because original dish used to be in this shape. Nowadays it is not as common.
