Last update: 14 September 2021

This page of the guide to Deathloop contains complete information and tips about exploring the game world. We explain e.g. how to explore Blackreef Island, how the time of day affects gameplay, how to get to places that are hard to reach, what attractions you can discover and how much freedom of exploration the game offers.

Travelling between Blackreef Island districts

As a reminder, the story of Deathloop is set on Blackreef Island - Deathloop: Exploring the world - Basics - Deathloop Guide

As a reminder, the story of Deathloop is set on Blackreef Island. During the game, Colt tries to get out of this location, and Julianna tries to prevent him from doing so.

Deathloop doesn't feature one big world map - you can't travel around the whole island without restrictions. There's one starting location and 4 islad districts in the game- Manor Cliffs, The Complex, Updaam, Fristad Rock and Karl's Bay. You can visit only these places.

The districts of Blackreef are not directly connected to each other. To travel between the locations you need to use the tunnels under the island, which will also serve as Colt's hideout and home base at the beginning of the game. You need to choose the district you want to visit while you're still in the tunnels, and once you've done everything in it, you have to return to the sewers. Deathloop does not feature fast travel - you can't change your current location in any other way than by going back into the tunnels.

Times of day and their impact on exploration

Deathloop allows you to visit each district in one of the 4 times of day - it can be morning, midday, afternoon or evening - Deathloop: Exploring the world - Basics - Deathloop Guide

Deathloop allows you to visit each district in one of the 4 times of day - it can be morning, midday, afternoon or evening. When you enter a given district, you don't have to rush, as the selected time of day won't change when you explore the district. This way, you can safely explore the available areas.

The times of the day change only after you return to the tunnels. Each return from a given district causes an automatic jump to the next time of day (e.g. from morning to midday). Additionally, you can speed up the time manually to proceed to a specific time of day more quickly (e.g. from morning to evening). For more information, see Changing the time of day - how?.

Choosing the time of day is not minor - it has a key impact on the game. Most missions (Leads), Visionary assassinations, and optional activities force you to visit the districts at a specific time of day. If you go to a given location at the wrong time, you may not be able to complete a specific quest. In some cases, doing something at one time of day can influence another - for example, if you sabotage the stored fireworks, you can kill the mission target during the firework show in the evening.

Unique locations within the districts and their accessibility

The districts visited duering the game feature some important locations related to the current Leads (quests), and also optional locations that you don't need to explore to complete the game - Deathloop: Exploring the world - Basics - Deathloop Guide

The districts visited duering the game feature some important locations related to the current Leads (quests), and also optional locations that you don't need to explore to complete the game. It's important that some locations are only available at certain times of day. You can read about it in the character's journal or e.g. by finding a note with relevant information.

Some areas or buildings may be inaccessible for other reasons. For example, you may be forced to find combination for electronic locks, levers that you can pull or battery slots where you can restore power to a given part of the map.

When exploring the game world, remember that there are several different paths leading to most of the mission targets. If a given passage is causing you problems or is blocked, then you can look for alternative paths. This isn't a rule, though, and you will be able to visit some locations only after you meet very specific requirements.

Shifts and double jumps as a helpful tool in exploring the environment

When exploring the locations available in the game, remember that you don't have to remain on the ground; you can look for climbing spots and reach the rooftops or high shelves - Deathloop: Exploring the world - Basics - Deathloop Guide

When exploring the locations available in the game, remember that you don't have to remain on the ground; you can look for climbing spots and reach the rooftops or high shelves. Sneaking over enemies' heads makes it easier to avoid them and infiltrate the locations they guard. The following things can be very helpful:

  1. Shift - it's a teleportation power, identical to the Blink from the Dishonored games. For exploration purposes, you can use it, for example, to easily move to a rooftop or a more remote shelf, or to avoid injuries when jumping from high platforms.
  2. Double jumps - They are available by using the Spring Heeled medallion, which you can get for free at the beginning of each Loop (note - it must be placed in one of the 4 active slots). Thanks to double jumps you can also jump further. Moreover, you can also combine them with the Shift, e.g. activate the power after the second jump.

We've described how to jump and upgrade the Shift on the page Best powers.

Loot and interactive items

Whenever you visit a new location in the game world, you should look for interactive objects - Deathloop: Exploring the world - Basics - Deathloop Guide

Whenever you visit a new location in the game world, you should look for interactive objects. This way, you can find, above all, different types of loot. Then, it's good to remember about the colors that indicate the quality of a given item - purple and gold ones are the most valuable, but even those of a lower quality can come in handy or be disassembled. There's no carry weight limit, but the character can have only up to 3 different guns in his inventory at a time. Unnecessary items can be disassembled between missions to obtain Residuum.

In addition to the typical loot, you should also look for:

  1. Collectibles - these can be, for example, various documents, notes or audio recordings. This way you can not only add new items to your collection, but also get new clues.
  2. Interactive devices - This includes e.g. Minicoms (computers), levers, electronic locks (which require the correct combination) or knobs. Interacting with them can allow you to learn new things, solve puzzles or unlock new pathways.
