While exploring the middle part of Gale Cliffs (narrow passages between the cliffs), large underwater creatures may attack you. This makes it very difficult to obtain the Hermit's Family Crest artifact as part of the Pursuit called Hermitage.
The following warns about the impending monster attack:
- controller vibration (only if you're playing with a pad);
- progressive image distortion.
The moment you notice these symptoms, react accordingly and start escaping or prepare for a confrontation (two main variants are described below).

You can recognize the monster by its big red eye. It seeks to ram your ship and this can lead to:
- damaging the ship - should it happen, return to Dusty Pontoon and pay for repairing the ship;
- throwing part of the cargo overboard - if it happens, the cargo is irretrievably lost, so avoid traveling with valuable items in the hold (it's recommended to transfer them to Storage in any harbour).
Option 1 - Haste the monster

By default, the only option is to flee, because your ship does not have any offensive arsenal.
If you gave the NPC Collector the first Ornate Key relic (The Marrows, the starting region), he granted you the Haste skill. Select it from the drop-down menu to have it ready (see the picture above).

After the monster starts chasing you, use Haste to swim faster. Watch the bar on the bottom left of the screen so you don't overheat the engines and cause damage. You can also equip the ship with better engines to increase its standard top speed.
If you don't have Haste, manoeuvre between the rocks and turn sideways. This will increase the chances of you not being caught up and hit.
Option 2 - Banish the monster

After finding the Jewel Encrusted Brand relic in Stellar Basin, you can unlock the Banish ability at the Collector's.
The Banish skill will come in handy when returning to Gale Cliffs to discover 100% of the region's secrets. Similar to Haste, select Banish from the drop-down menu to have it ready.

Activate Banish when a monster approaches. This skill will temporarily drive the monsters away from the area and it will also work on the creature described on this page. Use your free time to search the entire central part of Gale Cliffs, which was previously patrolled by the large monster.
